I have a 1968 FJ40 with a 2008 5.3 Vortec with a 4l60e tranny mated to a stock Toyota transfer case with an Advanced Adapter.

My toyota speedo is shot, and since I am already running Autometer gauges (volts, battery, oil, and fuel), I figured I might as well upgrade to an Autometer tach and speedo.

Since I am going from a mechanical speedo, to a digital, I (from my research) will need to get the input signal from the Chevy VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

I have very little info from the PO, about the conversion, so I am a little lost. Where would that sensor be? What wire should I be looking for?

I apologize for my ignorance.

I'm not too familiar with the 5.3 and 4L60E, since I have a 5.7 and NV4500, but I believe your speed sensor is in the side of the transmission. The tach output signal wire should be listed on the 5.3 wiring diagrams on LT1SWAP.com. I'll see if I can find the wire for you.

VSS wiring is shown here: http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/4L60E PNP Signals, VSS Signal and Tow-Haul Signal.gif

Great info here. Look at page 16. http://www.painlessperformance.com/Manuals/60219.pdf

Yeup...^^^^
It's on the AA tail housing adapter. Need the reloctor ring too.
Not 100% sure as its been a while, but doesn't that need to be tied into the ECU and harness for it to run properly??
How did the PO get around that?

You don't NEED VSS, but it will run better with some signal to at least tell the PCM the vehicle is moving.
I plan to use the marlin vss that screws into the transfer case where the speedo cable went. I'm hoping the PCM will be happy with a 12v square wave rather than the 1-120v sine wave it's expecting.

It's very easy to get a speedo to read the 12v square wave, or I'll get a GPS speedo.

The VSS should already be hooked up since the computer needs it. There should be wire coming of the computer for your speedo.
