Thinking of a 5.3 Vortec Swap with chevy automatic tranny in my 62. Im only getting 9 MPG and its a slow pig. What have you guys been getting for milage and how is the power and handling.

Thanks

great power, 15mpg in the city, 14 on the hwy going 80 with stock gears, h55, and 33's

going 70 i get more like 16mpg on the hwy.

Damn, thats great!

Thanks

I get around 13 city (I have a heavy foot) and around 15-16 highway. I got 20 driving through Yosemite last summer when I was going slow and easy... I have the H-55, stock 3.7 gearing and 33" BFGs.

Mr Zero's Dark side: 15-16 mixed driving on 33's

Gswest Code 1: 15-16 with the 4l60e tranny on 31's

Meatloaf's White ghost: got 16 on the highway on 33's

Snocruiser Snow Bruiser: To be determined it will be a 6.0

Iaintscared1969 Big Blue 350 old school w/stock 4 speed 13 but lots of HP!

All depends on how many smiles per mile you want on any given day!!!

Wow, I thought that you'd get more mileage than that! I would love to have that much power, but a diesel with better mileage sounds better to me.

Would any of you guys choose a different engine in hindsight?

For better mileage you can go with the 4.8l. It isn't done that often, but the power should be fine for a '60 and the mileage better. If you can get your hands on one of the new vortecs with displacement on demand and variable timing the mileage improves greatly.

NOPE unless I went with a 6.6 Duramax. Still working on that one though. I would like to install a new displacement on demand engine though. That would be trick.

You sure about this? Depends on conditions me thinks.

I've been doing the research (mental gymnastics?) of a modern engine swap.

The new (~2006+) stuff has different EPA ratings in the "native" platform. The 4.8 gets ~1 mpg worse than the 5.3? Sounds odd? The 4.8 doesn't get active displacement (turning cylinders off when not required) and the 5.3 does. Also, cruise may not be at BSFC... or maybe there is something else going on.

Since a '60 is roughly the same weight and aero profile of a modern half ton GM pickup (worse?) the numbers should be similar. I'd guess the extra torque of the 5.3 would be better for cruise also.

For the amount of effort to do a engine swap I wouldn't bother with the 4.8 unless you were doing a much smaller/lighter vehicle. Even then I wouldn't be surprised if the 5.3 was a better final product just because of the active displacement.

This is all speculation on my part. Makes sense to me. LOL

I should have separated the 4.8 suggestion from the 'active displacement' suggestion as two different suggestions, they got kind of muddled together in my original post.

I hadn't seen the numbers and it is interesting the 5.3 gets the same mileage now as the 4.8 - at least on the sticker.

I don't think the 60 is even remotely close to as efficient as a modern Chevy, especially the 1/4 ton - but I'm just guessing. There's been a lot of research in the last 2 years about that.

But I agree the 5.3 is much better suited to the weight of the 60, it's what I'm about to put in mine. But not a DOD one - couldn't find one.

you are pushing a brick...

mileage is gonna suck without a diesel..

I get some where around 13-14 in town 16 at 65-70 on the freeway and 14 at 80 :hhmm: with a 6.0 & 4L80 in my 89' 62 with stock gears and 32 / 11.5s as far as power is concerned it scoots right along :p

I am new to all this, but I bought a 62 with a 5.3 and 4L60E done right. I just had 4.88s installed and I am getting around 11 in the city and 13 highway, but I have a bit of a heavy foot.
