just had my alt. checked out because it was not showing a charge, it tested out fine, the guy told me somewhere there should be a voltage regulator.... wondering if I never put it back on... any one know what it looks like.... 1974 fj40

Make sure the alternator hasn't been replaced with one that has an internal voltage regulator. If not, it should be mounted on the firewall. I forget which side of the firewall the VRs are mounted on for left hand drive rigs....but mine was on the passenger side on a RHD rig....

Now, I wasn't able to find anyone locally who could test the VR...maybe someone in a larger city would have the ability to do so.

my problem is I am doing a full fame off... putting it all back together now... so I need to know what it looks like so I can try to find it in my piles of crap

Voltage Regulator

Upper left on firewall, black box with green letters. A bit different for the older models but box looks pretty much the same and has the same location (I think).

There are many different variations on the color of the box and print I know of.

The newer ones have 5 or 6 leads, the older ones have 3.

The FSM details testing of voltage regulator in detail.

I don't know where it was in 1974, but the VR on my 1971 is just under the clutch master....

You mean that little thing is not my indestructable black box flight recorder!??.... Oh.

:D

IIRC I think it was on top the driver's side fender , beside the apron.....

But I can be completely wrong :bang:

would there be a negative result if you had a voltage regulator on the firewall and installed an alternator w/an internal regulator, do two regulations make an irregulation?

Dont bother it is easy enough to bypass the external vr if you are using an internal

I have seen some set ups with the pos batt straight to the alt but I think you'd be better off with a fusible link from the alt in case of malf---could make for an ugly meltdown

In the red circle under the clutch master..... the one in the pic is by-passed with a diode for a internal regulated alternator....

yes, with the three taped wires on it... strangely though that is the wrong vintage one. it should have a three pole plug on it. yours is an early up to maybe 1970 style regulator. they are cheap, maybe get a new one?

PS, I hope the thermostat housing halves are just together to keep from loosing pieces, not in final post paint form since it is backwards...

that pic was like 2 years ago... I forgot to look last night so I started going through photos I had at the office...

that is weird.... I will have to see if the wiring harness is spliced there to make it fit in... but I am almost sure it is not

The spades on the ends of the stubby wires would slip into the slots in the factory plug, so it may not have been spliced on the harness. Just some short wires to make the older regulator work.

After messing around with various stock Toyota alternators and regulators, and installing a winch which I use hard and often, I finally said "F-IT" and went with a 95 amp GM 12si.

The wiring is easy, lots of writeups. Only special part req'd is a diode which you can get from Radio-Shack.
