You can buy a lot of tools for that kind of money! Best to learn how to do it yourself. How many kms on your truck? Does the Injection pump really need to be rebuilt, or just resealed? It's a big difference. Most just need to be resealed, but people generally don't understand the difference.

It has 185,000km. I didn’t think it would need a rebuild so soon. Wouldn’t a new injection pump be cheaper than a getting a rebuild?

Absolutely amazing! Good tips from @GTSSportCoupe . Do yourself a favour and get some manuals. Figure out if the pump really needs rebuilding, if at all, or its just injectors. Pumps are pretty tough, filter that fuel properly and keep that oil fresh. Look at the invoice, most of those shops have no clue/don't have the tooling to rebuild pumps and send them out to someone else. If it's gotta come off, pull it off yourself and sent it off to the rebuilder. When it's back its usually just a matter of timing the pump and resealing the assembly. I'll sell you three cans of brake clean and some shop towels all day for $165.00!! F@#K sakes!!! Source a factory NOS one from Europe somewhere, with the money saved, take the family to Japan and tour the assembly plant when the pandemic is over... Wasn't directed at you, just the never-ending gouging from those shops! There's a wealth of knowledge on this site, keep digging into it. Good luck!

Does your truck drive the way it always has, but your injection pump leaks now? It's very typical for the seals of the rotary injection pumps on these 1990 plus diesel landcruisers to dry up at some point and need replacing. I've had to do it to both of the Toyota diesels I've had. It doesn't mean they need rebuild at all. And as I wrote near the beginning of this thread, new seals are only about $50.

If your injection pump was dying, you'd have different issues. They get super clattery, your truck would have a hard time starting, be super smokey, low on power, etc. Even if this was the case, you'd send the pump only out to a specialty diesel shop and have it evaluated with quote before proceeding.

The bulk of the work is getting the pump off the engine, and back on. Most of the job is fairly straight forward though. Between us all here we have the tools you would need for removing/installing and re-timing. Or you could just pay Marigold to do that work, and ask to deal with the pump yourself. I could help you seal it if you want. It just takes a couple hours.

The injection pump works great just leaks a lot. When it wasn’t leaking so bad, I just drove it but the leak got worse, so I had to park it. I have considered doing the job myself but I have never done the job before and am a little nervous about it. I’m clueless on how to do the timing. Maybe I could remove the pump, reseal it and get Marigold to reinstall/time the pump?

OK, good to know it's just pump seals. Depending on which seal in particular is leaking, it's sometimes possible to replace it with the pump left on the vehicle even.

Whomever takes the pump off should be the one to put it back on. I think you're asking for problems any other way. So if you take it off, you should put it back on. Or have Marigold do it all, and you select who the pump will be sent to.

It's easy to get the timing close enough that the vehicle is drivable. You could then get Marigold to time the pump for you, or could borrow the tool (friend of mine has it) and do it yourself. It's just a dial gauge indicator that mounts on the back of the injection pump.

You could just get a reseal quote ahead of time and challenge marigold on their price. It sounds like they're doing a bit of a cash grab with the price they've provided.

@Westcoast78 You should download the manual for your motor and get familiar with it if you haven't already. Toyota manuals are excellent, and a great way to learn how to do your own wrenching. http://repairmanual.free.fr/_1PZ_1HZ_1HD-T_engine.pdf

Also, this is the seller I ordered my seal kits from. You should order one regardless, just to give yourself some options. Toyota 1HD & 1HZ Diesel Injection Pump Repair Seal Kit + Free Instructions (4) | eBay

Can you post some pictures of your leaking injection pump? From above and below if possible? I could probably tell you which seal is leaking just from pictures.

I tried to get some photos of the pump but the tight spot and lack of light made it really hard. No idea where it is leaking from. I probably need to remove the batteries to get a better view. When I do, I’ll post up some pics. Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for the help but the truck is at Marigold Service right now. I got sick of it just sitting in the driveway, I decided to give myself an early Christmas present.

I saw it and thought that might have been yours. Nice clean rig - looks good. You should have them do the timing belt and water pump etc. while they've got the front of the motor apart....

I am getting the water pump and fuel filter changed too. I had the timing belt changed recently so that didn’t need to be done. I can’t wait to drive it again. I’m so happy that my 5 year old daughter loves it as much as I do. When we dropped it off, she said (in a whiny concerned voice) “is the truck gonna be ok?”lol

That's really cute what your daughter said. I hope it all comes together well for you! Look forward to meeting you in person at some point (darn Covid anyhow).

So... The good news is the truck is getting fixed, bad news is it wont be ready until late January. They said parts are coming from the UK

Truck is fixed. Injection pump was rebuilt. Everything works and looks good. Anyone have any idea what the rusty pipes are? The are mounted on the firewall.

I do believe those are the lines to the rear heater.

Probably even rustier under the truck, if you don't use the rear heat you can just bypass to avoid the inevitable leak.
Thanks. I take a look to see how bad they are underneath. The rear heater still works and I use it often because I have my 5 year old in the back sometimes , hopefully they aren’t too bad
