Insurance for our vehicles is a sore subject so I thought I would relate my recent experiences.

I was receiving notices from Hartford about their AARP policies so I decided to call. In the end I saved over 1100/yr for homeowners and three cars. I realized their coverage on my '70 40 was pitiful, they relied on the original retail cost, so I called Hagerty and found I could get 12 times the insurance value with a reduction in the deductible for $114 less per year. If I had the 40 stored in an enclosed garage I could have gotten the coverage at no deductible for the same cost but since I have a car port open on two sides I had to go with a $500 deductible.

The bottom line is it is worth the time to compare the coverage with different companies. I thought I was getting a good deal with Kemper through the bank I do business with but I quickly found out they were raking me over the coals each year. Insurance and prescriptions are a racket and we need to be careful with who we do business with.

AARP insurance, I haven't looked into that, need a break myself. Used to have Amica, the no hassle company. But they are 30% higher than most. Changed to Erie, they suck too. Will start looking, thanks for the tip.

I figured you for another USAA man.

@David1947 So you just used Hagerty for your 40?
I just did an on line quote and came up with $272.00 per year. I do have an enclosed garage.
Mine is an "82 and I put Guaranteed value of $20,000.
Does this sound about right?
Thanks
Shane
I have been trying to check into changing insurance for cars and house to get it down so I can insure the 40 and get it on the road this year. I know they are just doing their job, but it feels like I am chasing my tail at times.

Selling the 45LV opened the garage back up for the 40, so I switched my 40 to Hagerty. My annual premium is $366 and I suspect the amount is higher than most due to the fact that I am in SC, the policy includes collision and that the coverage amounts are somewhat excessive as because of an "umbrella policy" I have through Travelers. Note: The annual premium for the coverage on the 40 with Travelers was almost exactly the same as what I am paying Hagerty, but Travelers did not include collision coverage.

I was able to get my online estimate down to $252/year but only after declining a couple services, dropping the total value to $20,000 and raising deductibles to $500. (Guilford County, vehicle lives in the garage, and less than 2000 miles per year)

I tried this one last year after i fail yo pay my 40 insurance. They gave me a quote for $100 a year. I decide to parket. Probably i will put it back on the road this year.

Also if you read the NCDMV rules you can drive a 25yrs old or older vehicle with a transporter tag as long as it is insure and going to a parade car show etc. it limits the use of the truck in this case but may work for me.

Shane,
I put the value of mine higher, 35K, just to make sure the vehicle would be covered, just in case. To much time and money invested now to scrimp and to cautious about the other idiots on the road now. I did get an online quote from Hagerty but found an agent in Thomasville who was super helpful and came up with the final price. Dealing with her was easy and much better than any other insurance company I have dealt with. After I finished with Hagerty for the 40 and Hartford for the van and home, I felt like hitting the agent from Kemper at my bank. That was one of those moments which made me feel quite stupid for not checking much earlier. On the other hand, Kemper was quite easy to deal with for a loss and I wonder about how easy Hagerty and Hartford will be but hope I never have to file a claim to find out.

I've got 4 drivers, 2 teenagers. I have 4 vehicles insured: 95 LC, 84 LC, 09 Accord, and 99 4Runner. I pay just under $200 a MONTH and feel like I'm getting a deal. I have had 1 accident claim (last weekend), 2 glass claims, and 2 roadside assistance claims in the last 4 years. I'm with Geico. Settling the claim was so easy it was ridiculous.

Saturday 8:22 AM: I made the claim from my phone at the scene. Included pictures.
Saturday around 10:30 AM: Geico called to make sure the info was complete and give me some phone numbers and claim info. 5-10 minute phone call.
Monday AM: Adjuster called to confirm location of the vehicle and that he'd be looking at it.
Monday PM: Adjuster called with results. The vehicle was totaled and he was going to offer me $5,600 after my my deductible of $1,500 for my 95 LC with 228,000 on the Odo. If I was listing it for sale I'd call the condition poor. He said he could tell it was "well used" and took $30 off the payout value for the condition. I told him I needed a salvage value and he hadn't done that yet.
Tuesday Mid-day: Adjuster called with salvage value. I went to get my stuff.
The next day my truck was delivered to my house in the AM and the adjuster came with forms to sign and a check in the afternoon.

At every contact they asked if everyone was ok and if there was anything else they could do. They asked twice if I wanted a rental car. We'll see how my rates change now, but so far I couldn't be happier with the experience.

*Update: Apparently we qualify for accident forgiveness. Even though it was my teenage son that had the accident and no other cars were involved, there's no immediate penalty. I like that.*

I was with Geico for years with the same service, could not recommend them more. I only changed when we insured the farm and I made the truck a part of the farm. All our vehicles are insured through the far policy, far cheaper. We'll see what Clyde can do when I have to up scale the insurance on a truck.

I've been with an independent insurance brokerage a while now in the Raleigh area and have written through about 10 different carriers. There are few companies that actually write true replacement coverage on a standard policy. Hagerty is by far the best collector car coverage and is mostly underwritten by Nationwide companies and has an A rating. Barrett Jackson insurance I believe is an American Modern company and will provide proper coverage as well.

I've run quotes with several other companies like Hartford, Travelers, Nationwide, and Liberty Mutual, and they will provide coverage on an msrp agreed value basis or functional replacement cost basis for restored or classic cars (i.e. you had an OEM part and they will get you aftermarket to replace).

If anyone wants a free quote, message me and I can shop it around with all of the different carriers we write through for free and make sure you are getting the best rate and review your coverage to make sure your vehicles are properly covered.

Still like Hagerty. Just increased the coverage by $5000 for just $25.

Bumping this back up to see if Hagerty is still a favorite. Also, any idea what I should I sure my 40 for?
If the number you pick is higher than what they have in the book (with yours I’m sure it will be) they’ll likely send out an appraiser.

As far as what I’d insure it for? As much as they let you. As David pointed out it’s cheap.

I did an online quote for 35k and it came out to 560 a year. I'm assuming that once you click the purchase button they send someone to verify its not some rust wrecked vehicle?

That seems high. I’d call them if I were you. They didn’t inspect mine. Just relied on the pics, but I was probably closer to what their book value was.

Hagerty is ridiculous, as when I tried to get a policy for my 80, they denied coverage since I said I would be taking it off road. Amica, saw the "flag" on my vehicle (grey market), denied coverage. Liberty granted me coverage (see my post), and a month or so later, my company, Allstate, got me coverage and this is the same company according to the Internet, was not going to insure grey market vehicles anymore. I even saved $8, from Allstate. Granted, I will add more coverage when all is said and done, but $40/month is paltry.

I also have two other vehicles with Allstate along with homeonwer's too. No scars on the license either.
