Ok. Yeah, have a pdf with pics of their findings.
This is a good reminder to take vids of your vehicle before and after taking it to have work done.
A shady shop could easily just say..."was like that before" without any way to prove it.

Ya that was good proof. No argument there! Good luck buddy.
Honest it will probably be fine. Like I said I’ve seen this before and haven’t had anything bad come out of it

I’ve found over the years best bet is DIY or just buying a new car with warranty.

I have owned over 100 vehicles in my day, and rarely have I had a shop perform work that I did not have to return for a correction. Sometimes twice. I wouldn’t say that I’m overly particular, I simply know how to read instructions and most shops don’t.

From the perspective of time/money/energy (all three are basically the same thing) DIY wins hands down. Plus it’s fun, most of the time.

I hear ya 100%. I had/have absolutely no time to research and perform this timing belt change. Would have been my first on this type of engine so would have take 3 times longer than the second time.

Picked up the GX this evening and still detect a slight clacking sound...particularly on the drivers side. The mechanic said it was the injectors. It sounded loud at the shop but was hard to compare to the first 'Before' vid until I was able to record another and put them side by side.

Thoughts?

Sounds way closer to normal. Glad they got it fixed for you.

Heres the problem I suspect. He didnt remove the service bolt on the drivers camshaft scissor gear. Thats why its still clattering.

I had that same thing happen after having a head refreshed because a hung valve. The shop did have a bolt in the gear so I assumed it was correct but as soon as I had it back together and running it sounded like s***! I pulled the cams again and clocked the spring gear correctly. After that it was sounding smooth as silk! 5,000+ miles later and still no problems.

Whats involved in 'clocking' the spring gear?

Just means having it installed in the correct orientation so timing is in sync between cams.

I think the moral of the story here is leave your cam seals alone unless they are leaving drips on the ground :)

Thanks dude....that salt sure is tasty in this gaping wound ...lol.
I pretty much came to that conclusion after reading your post before picking the truck up the first time.

I've done way worse learning what not to do, don't sweat it.

Question about the camshaft seals that were initially installed that started this fiasco. How many times can you remove/replace the camshafts before they too need to be replaced, even tho theyre new? Also the same question for the valve cover gaskets?

Personally I’d replace the cam seals anytime there are removed, too much work to redue. A new valve cover gasket should be ok if redone right.

Camshafts are soild steel no need to ever replace them. They should have provided new cam seals a second time when they pulled the cams out to fix their ****up. The valve cover gasket is probably okay being removed and re-used as it does not come into contact with any moving parts, but I would still request a new one.

No new work has been done yet. Just a vid illustrating the difference before/after. They of course said everything sounded 'normal' to them so I created this

This has turned into a major fiasco!

They fixed the sissier gear backlash issue and buttoned everything back up. Then I noticed oil drips coming from that area a few days later. I checked under the tb cover and sure enough oil pooling in the crevices behind the belt. Back to square 1.

I took it back and they just told me it wasnt the camshaft seals but actually the "plate in front of the seals"? They needed silicone gasket around them? Can anyone with knowledge about this tell me if this is legit.

Seems to me with undamaged seals there shouldnt be any oil past them in the first place. Is this just them putting a temporary fix to hold back any oil leakage?

Plate?? Only thing I can think of is the front top cam bearing assembly.
This needs to be removed to take the cams out and replace the seals. It also has to be resealed with fipg/silicone during reassembly. They had to take that off during that repair.
