Take a look on some forums for a reputable Toyota shop in your area. Online reviews will also help. $300.00 diag to tear into it might be part of the repair. If they find it is a cam seal and/or cam bearing cap (or anything that other shop touched) have them document it and go talk to the owner of that first shop. They already screwed up once. I’d try to altleast get the money back you spend on labor.
I’m sure this isn’t the first vehicle that tech has f up working there!
Everything is about customer service and good reviews these days. I’m sure they don’t need this attention on online review.

I hear ya 100%. Normally I do most of my general maintenance precisely for this reason. I stop short with things like the timing belt on interference engines or massive time syncs. Ive definitely had my fair share of dirtbag mechanics jerking their clients around.

That being said Im a little hesitant to drop the vehicle off yet again to another mechanic to troubleshoot. Even if they find the cam seals are leaking.....the first shop will take their word for it? And im out another 300+ (half the cost to replace the cams seals to begin with) Im just sick of the whole thing.

FWIW, next time, timing belts/chains are not as daunting as some think. As long as the timing marks are lined up when you pull the tensioner pin, you're good. I always hand spin the crank one full circle and check it before firing it up. You'd have to do something pretty dumb to mess it up, even on an interference motor. This GX was the 3rd 2UZ I did a belt on in the last 5 years or so.
