I just had my TB and Camshaft seals replaced and it now sounds like a diesel engine its rattling so badly. Luckily I have recordings of just before taking it in and just after getting it back today.

Input from anyone with knowledge of what they're hearing would be great so I can get back to the shop with specifics of what the noise is coming from.

When you replace the cam seals on these motors the camshafts have to come out. There is gears on the cams that keep them in timing (not the timing belt gear). You need to put a bolt in the gear before you remove the camshaft so the gear does not spin. If they forgot to remove that bolt after they reinstalled the cams it will cause a abnormal ticking/tapping noise.
May or may not be this but it would be my first guess.

I would stop driving immediately and have it towed back to the shop. Have them do a leakdown/compression test to be sure they didn't **** your valves up. That cost should 100% be on them. Were they present when you picked it up?

Also might want to post the shop's name so others know to avoid.

100% ! I wouldn’t even start the engine again . It could be a handful of things. Could easily hurt your motor. Definitely get it towed back!

Update is the exhaust camshaft scissor gear backlash was not properly set after the camshaft seals were replaced. Sound legit?

Compression test had everything around the 150 psi mark. All but one were within a few psi of 150. That one was around 160 psi.

Basically they didn’t lock it in place while removing it. What bothers me more is they let you take it home like that. That technician probably isn’t test driving his vehicles or rechecking his work.
Glad it’s fixed and hopefully you won’t have anyone issues.
But I’d personally be looking for another repair shop or technician!
Amateur mistake….

More specifically it sounds like they f’d up the gear that keeps the exhaust/intake cams in time. Timing belt only drives one of them then there is a gear in between the two.

this is a pic if the gear they sent. Any damage visible?

I’ve seen this done a handful of times and never seen any damage from it. It usually just makes a loud tapping type noise. If you have any doubts or it’s making a different or noise I’d have it checked out by another shop. You paid good money for that repair and that was a rookie mistake.

Exactly. I dont like the idea of my GX being a training tool for novices to learn on.

Most likely. He didn’t lock them in place before he removed them and put them back in that way. Unfortunately this could be something that may cause premature damage down the road.
Personally I’d want to see all 4 cam gears or take it somewhere else for a inspection at there cost…
Horrible situation, especially for a maintenance repair.

It was an independent shop. Funny, a former Lexus dealer master mechanic recommended the shop to me to have work done :P They have great reviews across the board and have been around a long time. Unfortunate.

ANY different noises coming from your motor now would not be a good sign. Atleast have them document of the come back and what they found and how they repaired it.
