I've Been looking for valve cover nut options as it seems the earlier years are hard to find.
Anyone know of any options or where I can find some without tapping the home equity line of credit?
SOR wants my first born for these.
Production date: 12/70
Thanks!

The Toyota cap nut is NLA, but I believe it's a 8 x 1.25 thread (at least my '68 is). I'm sure you can find something close anywhere. The washer and seal are still available (90210-08010).

Do you have any of them currently mate? If so take one down to any decent engineering supply store and they would be able to size it up and source what you need at a fraction of the cost of a genuine part. It only needs to nip the gasket tight enough to seal the cover nothing too special

Yeah, thanks Pommy!
I thought of that but I believe the OEM ones have a sleeve that goes beyond the cover and into the seals. My rig never had an OEM nut so I'm not sure. I might have to buy just one and do what you suggest.
Thanks for the reply!

That's what the part number I gave you is for.

Thanks Oakley40!
I got you now. I guess I didn't get it at first. The rubber seal just looked different than what I was seeing online. I'm going to order some and put 'em to work.

I still have 40 or so used ones that I’m using as ‘bait’ with bigger sales, but I’ve also been wondering about options for the non resto guys.

There are aftermarket acorns out there, but they’re not tall enough to be useful for this application IMO.

So, what about using some coupling nuts and welding a dome over one end? It would seal the end of the rocker stud (which is the point) and be a lot taller than the commercially available acorns. McMaster has the 8mm nuts for two fifty a piece.

@Rock40 did a wing nut on my valve cover on my ‘66. But, I can’t recall where he found them or robbed them????

When I was originally looking for a cap nut I could use, I came across these M8x1.25 High Crown Cap Nuts at Grainger, but I didn't want 50, if they weren't going to work. M8-1.25 Cap Nuts - Nuts - Grainger Industrial Supply

At about $15 for 50 of them and stainless seems to be a bargain.

I meant to also say that I'm not sure if they won't work...

Those are the short ones. The hex shoulder on the factory acorns is at least twice that tall. You’d need 5-6 washers under one of those to take up the gap.

Here’s a pic of two aftermarket acorns next to some NOS ones for height comparison.

Very interesting. They’ve got the height. But factory uses a 14mm wrench, not a 12. Still, I think they’d be a boatload better than a standard nut or a wing nut that leaves the threads exposed. Form follows function.
