Ive searched for some time but have been unable to find the proper SST for removing valve shims on a 1fz-fe. Any ideas where I might find one?

This has come up in the past. Essentially it became evident that nobody ever does it. Although the engines have a bit of a rattle to them, when you check the clearances usually you'll find they are within spec. Did you check them?

If you need the tool, I would think someone like Cdan could give you a line on one.

thanks for the quick reply. I Will check clearances and see where I need to go from there. The motor has a tick coming from the valve cover. From what you say I'm thinking it might be a lifter issue and not an adjustment issue.

The tick is probably the power steering pump gear. That little POS is noisy! Replacing mine solved my noisy motor, but they're pretty pricey... When I rebuilt the motor at 250k, all the valves were in spec.

I would check the power steering pump gear if the pump was rebuilt before. We rebuilt a PS pump recently. A gear tooth was slightly deformed from dropping, and it produced loud knocking noise, louder than any valve ticking noise I ever heard.

Id say its the power steering pump also ,replace mine and now it sounds like a cumming diesel.bought a new gear for it ,just hasn't been bad enough to make me want to fix it

If you do choose to check the valve adjustment do the rearmost valves on #6 first. If they are out of spec the cams need to come out to change the shims. With the cams out you do not need the SST.

Any Toyota dealer can order them. They are not stocked at the dealer level because they are very rarely needed. There are 17 thicknesses to pick from and at ~10 bucks a copy an "assortment" gets expensive fast.

my motor sounds like I have a a sewing machine running under the hood, so I've been told it needs a valve adjustment. Also been told I can probably switch some of the current shims around to adjust. I read the how to do it, but what do most people do for parts?

From 1993 to last spring when I "retired" I can count on one hand how many times I sold shims for valve adjustment on a 1FZ. Most of the (still rare) need was when the valves were ground and the machine shop did not tip the valve stems.

What "most people" do for parts is order shims if they actually find out of spec clearance.

Thanks for the info and the quick response!! I've only owned it for about 4 months, but was told it had an the engine out at 180k (not sure if it was swapped or rebuilt) It has 250k now. so you could be onto something with the valves not being ground or tip properly. It'll be a few weeks before I can park it long enough to work on it, but I'll let you know what I find.

Also been thinking about this lately.. I might pull the TB and valve cover to get some numbers. 299800 miles at this point... Seems prudent.

"Most of the (still rare) need was when the valves were ground and the machine shop did not tip the valvestems"

... I imagine a few shims were also sold to guys who didnt record where each of the 'lifters' (buckets) were originally located when they stripped the heads for a trip to a machine shop. I dont actually know if mixing up the buckets and associated shims has an effect...I didnt want to experiment to find out..but I am pretty sure it would.

Oh yes...and I you do find that no.6 is 'out of spec' measure and record all of the clearances before you take the camshafts off. Of course if for any reason the camshafts are worn (or the 'lifters') the measurements will be for nought.
