My cousin in the military is thinking of bringing over a Prado if there is good value in it. 1986 or so Prado with 256,000 Kilometers on it. It's clean and looks like an FJ60, it's diesel. Any idea on the value on this?

Wonder what type of exemptions American servicemen have? When I was visiting my cousin in Auburn a few weeks ago, someone in the Albertson's parking lot spotted my BJ74 and we started chatting. He assumed that I was in the military since I had a RHD turbo diesel...guess he didn't see my BC plates in the dark.

Im assuming your cousin is in Japan or Korea. This Prado is for sale in japan , 93 LJ78 8 seater 2.4 diesel with 156000klms. Price $2610 USD

Yes he is in Okinawa (sp?) and looking to ship a Prado or LC stateside. I don't know if it's worth the red tape to get it over here or not.

Something like that is 15 cubic metres at $60_70US per m very roughly

Not a bad cruiser but I would opt for a heavy duty cruiser vs the light duty prado if possible. Tell him to bring back a BJ.. I have a friend in the AF that is there and claims they are fairly common.

If I were in Okinawa, I'd get a unique Japan-only model, like the HZJ77. Only one in the US ;)

He is leaving the purchase up to me on what I want brought over but I have to research the details on what I can bring and who can receive it here and all that junk. No emissions standards where I am at so that should make it easier to tag. He said the vehicles are very inexpensive, all I have to do is give him the models of what I want and he will look. I read the link on importing but will have to get exact details and pricing to see if I should do it.

Be sure you know what you are getting into. I've heard of a USAF Major who bought an FJ75 troopy and had all the correct papers. His home state (Michigan) sent him the title, registration and plates for it. A couple of months before he was set to move back to the states, MI withdrew his registration and said they issued it in mistake. He ended up selling it where he was.

Forget it

Unless your cousin is a prestidigitator forget it. Service men and women are covered by the same restrictions that John Q Public is. If he finds something over 25 years old that you want he can do it, otherwise it is close on impossible.

Been there and tried to help two different people with this.

Oh, that shipping quote that someone else made is light, try $80 a cubic meter for LCL plus about 50% over that in incidentals. Once you get to 15 cubic meters or so it starts to look better to go FCL but that is a lot more work and cost. RORO is a lot cheaper but I doubt they do that from the Rock.

Great looking truck :D

The 2.4 TD (2LTE Engine) is a bit of a slug & fuel economy is poor, due to being underpowerred.
The tranny is quite good & accessories are interchangeable with the Bundera. I have found that most 7x series body bits are sort of interchangeable (Bumpers, Towbars, Bullbars) & the rear dif is similar to the Dyna (1.5 to 2.5 tonne utility)

People tell me that the BJ60 is a slug with the 3.4l diesel (I find it just fine especially with the turbo), I can't imagine a 2.4l diesel in a 'Cruiser!
If this guy can bring over a 'Cruiser I think he'd be better off with a '60 series, '70 series or an '80 series.

If he can do it, go the 80 series.
60 series is leaf sprung & slow.
The 70 is coils, so a nice ride, but does not articulate well, especially the front end and also the 2.4 (Turbo Diesel with EFI) motor is all of about 70hp. I like mine because it does what I bought it to do, which is touring & medium 4wding (as well as something I can take to the supermarket & not care about the shopping trolley or irresponsible other motorists openning their doors into it factors.)
80 is coils as well, articulation is the best of the toyotas in stock form (my opinion) & the 4.2, even though is not overly high in the horsepower stakes, makes the vehicle a very good package.
The other advantage of the 80 is that the accessories for the imported 80 will be the same, or very similar to the locally found 80 series vehicles.

He has found a couple of sweet 80's but after all the reading here it looks next to impossible to bring one over here aside from sticking empty barrels under it and rowing it back here. Too bad, great prices on some setup rigs. I'm not moving there just to drive an 80, I like my 60 :)

Has ANYONE had luck bringing in a new Cruiser? I have yet to hear a good story.

Couldn't you get the engine/drivetrain out of the vehicle and shipped in a separate container and put them back in when you get them home and get the vehicle registered in some states? Not cheap and maybe a long shot, but... ;)

Good luck!
