I want to install a vacuum gauge to test for a leak. I thought I read there is a place on 2F intake manifold where you can unscrew a plug and hook up a vacuum gauge. Is this true or do I have to go through a rubber vacuum hose?

I'm in the same boat!!!
I want to hook up a good vac gauge just like you. My '77 has a plug in the intake just forward of the carb--looks like it is an 8 mm bolt plug screwed into the intake(pics later). I'm having difficulty finding a good vac gauge(graduated in 1" of Hg subdivisions) to hook up

There is usually a three pronged thing coming up out of the intake manifold in front of the carb. It is a "gas filter" for items that pull manifold vacuum. If you are desmogged it may be replaced with a plug. pull the plug and find a pipe fitting that will match it and adapt a fitting to take it from there. Otherwise find a T fitting to T into the brake booster. I have yet to find anything that will work there.

If you opt to use the factory gas filter as the vacuum source, check it thoroughly first. After 30+ years, many of them are so carboned up that they no longer provide reliable vacuum.
