Landcruiser phil was kind enough to share one of his videos. Actually two of them.

They are just a snapshot of the intensity of these trails. It shows the jolting and rocking around you take in the cab, plus the drop offs and dangers that surround you on the outside! You can get a feel of these shelf roads and how sketchy they are.

Funny, coincidentally he happened to miss us there by a couple of days.

Great trip report, Alex, and outstanding pics and video. Hope you're ready to come out again next year.

I'm in!

But, pasqual did mention baja.... i've always wanted to go there too. I know that i'm for sure going west again if i get the invite for another epic trip like this. Oh, and i'm getting a remote for the go pro!! haha

With an e: Pasquale. Just say'n ;)

Also...I see you ignored the requirement for OEM wiper blades Alex...Onur won't ride with you:flipoff2:

Seriously: Nice video work!

I am a little late to the party but awesome write-up Alex! I thoroughly enjoyed reading through it

Now when are you leading a group out there, I want in :grinpimp:

JP whenever we can get a group of people together that are actually serious and don't all back out, then i'll be happy to lead a group out there!

I am sure we could find a few hardy souls that'd be up for the adventure! What time of year? Would you tie it in with Cruiser Moab again?

I would not tie it in with cruise moab. I'm not saying that anyone shouldn't go to Cruise Moab, but it would really make it a super long trip and to be honest, these trails are far cooler than the moab amusement park.

I think the same part of the year is perfect. Not too hot and not too cold, just right. Plus all the cactus are blooming so its really beautiful.

Also, in a perfect situation, if we had a group we could work out some sort of truck shipping if need be. It's not that i can't drive across the country again, but to be honest 2.5 days of HARD driving just to get there, takes a toll on you and your vacation schedule. I always thought the perfect scenario would be to drive out, wheel and then everyone drop their trucks off with a truck hauler, then we all board a plane from Moab and fly home. That might be cost prohibitive but worth looking at. The drive home always sucks.

If anyone cares....

I calculated my gas expense and i spent just at $1,675.00 in gas.

I drove 4,363 on road miles.

I drove 226.25 miles off road.

I was gone a total of 16 days.

I slept in 1 hotel the entire trip.

Good stats Alex. I drove almost 3500 miles from the West coast.

No hotels, though and never paid to camp.

I guess i should go ahead and finish this trip up...

So like i said, i realized when i got to Moab to top off on fuel that my cruise control wasn't working. I personally think that's a big deal. At least to me. It's along ways across the US and the cruise control makes the trip doable. Without it, i'm speeding and then holding up traffic the next second. I needed to get this CC fixed. I was thinking it was something simple. So, i went to the same McDonalds in Moab that i stopped at to try to surf the internet looking for a place to fix my exhaust. I pulled into the parking lot and dug through all my stuff and found a paperclip. So i read the code and pulled out the FSM. The FSM showed some sort of either a short in the wiring, or, a bad actuator motor.

I had spoken to slee at vendor night and told him i wanted to swing by the shop on the way home. I wanted to check it out and maybe, just maybe i might buy something from him. Now, i thought it would be a perfect time to just stop in and say "please just fix this" and see what happened. So i called him up and said i was heading that way and that i had an issue with the CC. I got his voicemail but within 10 minutes i had a return call from him. We talked about the issue and i told him that if he had a spare actuator i would swing by and buy it from him. We talked a little more and two things became apparent, he was going to be closed by the time i got there since i was still a solid 5 hours away, and, he had never sold an actuator and said he had never really seen one go bad. He said check the wires first.

I pulled off somewhere over the CO boarder on I70 at an exit and started to fiddle fart around with the trailer wiring. I did notice that the trailer wires had been smashed by my bumper and some rocks at some point, so maybe that was to blame. I snipped the smashed plug end off and wrapped everything up with electrical tape and then jumped back on the highway. Crossed my fingers and set the cruise.... it worked! Holy cow!

Well, it worked until i had to turn off the cruise because of traffic and when i went to set it it flashed again and turned off. bummer....

So, i pulled off another exit and looked at the wires around the actuator. Everything was covered in Utah red talcum powder dust. I had some electrical cleaner in my box of fluids and parts, so I got it out and went to pull the plugs. When i did i swear i heard a very slight electrical pop as if one of the wires around the actuator had a short. I juggled them around, sprayed cleaner on everything and hit the road again. Set the cruise.... it worked! This time it worked the entire trip home.

My goal was to make it to Denver of the night and grab a hotel room.

Cruising down the road, the weather was perfect. I jumped off the highway at Glenwood Springs which is a nice town. Really cool place. I gassed up, got some late lunch and messed around town for an hour or two. Then i jumped back on the highway.

I was a little behind schedule and making it to Denver was going to be a push. It was getting dark, late and i was tired. Somewhere near golden i started to encounter rain and a little snow again! So i decided to get a room and get some rest. I kept an eye on the exits and looked for a hotel, but one after another exit went by with no services. Finally, a comfort inn! So i pulled off the exit and into the hotel parking lot. I was already nervous just looking at this place for two reasons. One, there were kids everywhere so that meant it was going to be loud, and second, it was a pretty fancy hotel for a Comfort Inn; please don't be expensive?!

I walked in and i could tell immediately that the guy at the desk was having a bad night. I asked if they had rooms and he gave me the old sales pitch that he was full but think he had "just one room left"... i thought to myself yea right whatever buddy, this isn't my first rodeo and i love to negotiate, so bring it on! "yes, i have two more rooms left one with a king and one with two double beds" OK, i thought, i want the king so what's the price... $180 plus tax! I said to him WTF dude that's an expensive room. There is no way that room is worth that price. I told him i travel a lot and have stayed in plenty of hotel rooms to know that price is not justified here. Either he needs to do better or i was going to keep driving. He offered to reduce it by $10 which honestly i told him just was an insult. I pulled out my trusty iPhone and told him i would have to think about it and i needed to see what other options were out there. I walked out the door and looked up hotels near me..... none! Damn! The nearest hotel was 26 miles away and it had 3 out of 5 star ratings... great.

Exhausted, i walked back in, gave the guy a super dirty look and acknowledged without saying a thing that he had won. I handed him my credit card and got my plastic key. I walked back out to the truck to get my stuff. By this time it was about 9:45 pm and i had been driving all day. I got my bags, walked back into the room, sat them on the floor and plopped down on the sofa. I couldn't wait for a hot shower and to jump online and catch up on emails and such.

Just then the lights flickered and went out. WTF!!!!!!! The power to the entire area had just gone out! You have to be kidding me. I sat there patiently and thought it would be just a few minutes. After 15 minutes of darkness i walked back out to the front desk to inform them of my long stay in the wilderness with no comforts and that i had just paid and exorbitant hotel rate for services that i cannot use and that we would be having a frank discussion in the morning when i check out about the rate of this powerless room! He agreed and so i went back to the room.

Now, to be completely honest i will tell this part of the story... So i was hungry, dirty, tired, and now irritated. I walked a block away where they had power. There was a subway and a few little retail shops. As i walked over i could smell the smell.... pot! Well, it's not illegal in CO so now's the time to try some legally. There was a little pot shop there and it was really a pretty cool place. Very clean, run like a doctors office. I walked in, got a cookie, ate it (after my subway sandwich) and then walked back to the hotel. I plopped down on the bed and passed out. Next thing i remember was waking up at 12:45 am when the power finally came back on. I got up, took a quick shower, and then got back into bed. I slept like a rock.

Bummer on the hotel. I think they know that when a weary traveler comes in that they can gauge the price a bit as there's nothing else around. Doesn't make it right, but that must be what it is. Did you end up getting a deal?

Sounds like the pot shop was pretty awesome! Stopping at a place like that should be mandatory whenever driving through CO :D

Keep Broc and I in the loop for your next trip! Should have done Moab with ya...but after reading about the fuel cost, glad I stayed home this time. Will do it next year...I like the idea of a car haul'er!

I can't believe I've missed this thread until now. I stumbled upon it searching for "vacuum sealers", no sh!t !! Great job!

This was truly an amazing trip - excellent company, excellent scenery, excellent food, excellent wheeling, excellent weather... in no particular order.

For me, this was up there with last years Rubithon trip. I won't even try to compare them because they are apples & oranges.

You seemed to have glossed over one of the highlights - you and Pasquale jamming around the campfire! That was an unexpected treat! I don't speak "music", so I won't even try to describe it :D

Where've you been hiding?!?

I'm pretty sure the epic-ness meter would have shattered if these two characters made the trip!

Brian, you guys would have had a blast! And, our entertainment meter would have been pegged as well.

Cameron, thanks for the jamming props. It was just one of those perfect situations where two strangers, who both happen to like similar music and practice/play similar styles, and just both happen to bring guitars on a camping trip a thousand miles from home. It was the icing on the cake for sure.
