SOLD!

Can't believe that I'm even contemplating this, but some recent developments are forcing me to streamline my life.

For sale is my 1976 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. When I bought it I was specifically looking for one that had minimal rust and was to original specification, and that's what I found. The truck shows 82k miles and this is believed to be correct. The paint is likely all original -- when other than the 1970s would they have painted those stripes! The exterior paint is faded and there are some small dents here and there. The largest is on the right ambulance door (I tried to get this in the pictures) and there is a small dent where the spare tire carrier stops meet the left side ambulance door.

Asking $10,500 obo (truck is in Utah near Salt Lake City)
Title is clear and in my name

Highlights

  • Solid body and frame, original paint and glass
  • Strong 2F engine (believed to be original) with new/rebuilt Aisan carb
  • All smog equipment in place (passed CA smog in 2011 for previous owner, no smog requirement where I live)
  • Stock 4-speed transmission and transfer case
  • Stock front disc brakes with new master cylinder, rear slave cylinders, front pads and rear shoes
  • 5 new powdercoated Toyota OEM steel wheels and hubcap with new tires
  • Functional Warn 8274 winch
No Land Cruiser is rust free, but this one is in excellent shape. There are two small spots on the rear corners (see photos). The floors are all solid but do have some pitting and surface rust in places. The frame is solid as well. There is no rusting along the spotwelds above the rear wheel openings. Most of the rubber door seals are good, though the rear ambulance doors could probably use some new rubber -- they rattle a bit. The spare tire hanger does not rattle at all. All glass is factory Toyota including the windshield. The top seals well.

The rear jump seats are in good shape. The front seat frames are good, but the upholstery is shot. There are currently some aftermarket seat covers on those seats. The gauges all work as do the dash and gauge lights. The windshield washer isn't working (hose is broken) and the lighter is iffy, but all other internal switches work. Heater valve is a bit sticky (dash knob opens the valve but won't close it) but you can open or close the valve in the engine bay. Wiper arms and blades are new OEM parts. Heater (front and rear) works well. I have the AM radio and CB that were in the truck when I bought it, and do not know if they work. The radio opening in the dash was not cut wider and currently has a reproduction Toyota blanking plate. The winch is a Warn 8274 and functions fine. Wheels are new Toyota factory steel wheels (powdercoated) with new factory hubcaps and new tires.

Fellow MUDer pighead looked this one over for me before I bought it. He posted some pictures of his inspection here:

Was a tough decision to make but I need to clear some things up.

I forgot, also includes a set of 4 aftermarket wheels. Not sure the make (American Racing I think) but they're in solid shape.

Well Drew, I've been following along since you began your search. I understand your decision, and wish you all the best in your sale. I'd not hesitate to buy your truck based on all I've read about it, and I know the next owner will be happy with it.

Truck is tentatively sold to a local chap. Met him tonight and he made me a good offer. Deal should finish up on Saturday. I'm bummed it was necessary to do, but good to see it's going to a good home.

I'll update this once the deal is final.

SOLD

FJ40 was picked up by the new owner this morning. Sad to see it go, but it's going to a good home.
