I've found details of them as generator carriers, air compressor rigs, mobile welders etc.

How does the suspension work? Is it a torsion spring?

They should have made the center member able to rotate for more articulation.

Torsion type with a coil on each side, super beefy axle, good amount of clearance. I imagine that the more you load it, the more it'll articulate if you need it. Because of the pintle hitch, it'll simply mold itself to the terrain behind your rig.
