Using ATV winches to winch down a tall cruiser to get outta the garage.

Get a winch that releases very quickly so the rig jumps when you let off. Amaze your friends by bunny hopping logs on the trail. And laugh at the other crawlers as you speed towards the giant obstacle and leap onto the top of it.

It really is not a stupid idea at all.

:meh:

If you are SOA, just quickly change to an SUA steup to get in the garage, then back to SOA when you exit.

If you are SUA, keep a spare set of stock springs and change them out to park, then back to lift springs after you exit.

:flipoff2:

The theory is sound. Most (if not all) competition rock crawlers have winches, front and rear, for this purpose. They are usually much higher weight rating though.
....
And here I thought competition rock crawlers used those winches to control the axle travel and stop the springs from unloading.

Alex,

Is this truck going to be street legal? If your like me, then your going to want to drive that truck more and more. If you can't get it in/out of the garage easy, then your not going to drive it much - too much PITA.

If it's a wheeling truck - then put the 37's on, and just deal with air downs. Or do what our friend Eric did - have the garage openings cut and bigger door put in. :D

Both, but wheeling will only be 5% of the time.

I'm currently in a build off-site from my house. I have a sorry excuse for a garage at home with my critical height dimension being 80 1/4". I have a 2 1/2" lift (SOR with their tri configuration shackles) on it and I'm trying to decide on tire size. 33 vs. 31. Truck is in pieces and I don't think far enough ahead to calculate this type of stuff before spending thousands of dollars hoping it will work. Am I ok with 33's you think, or will the extra inch (31's) bring me within tolerance / help the situation, or am I all around F'ed (forced to run 215/50's so I can wheel daily with ease)? Anybody got a critical height dimension with similar setup?

jackhammer... tear the garage floor out.

don't laugh, i've already got an estimate to raise the header and install a taller door on this beeatch (not cheap :)). Is it a sign that you might have issues when you're willing to modify your house to accomodate the cruiser?

The wife is already pretty stoked about operation FJ40 (aka we're broke but still buying parts daily) - wait til she comes home and the garage is being modified. How can I explain that one? I can see it already......"you wouldn't get my closets customized but you'll tear out the garage door to fit that !@# $%^& "jeep""?

I bought a house and I am now putting on a garage to fit the 40... that is sad... 8' doors 14' ceilings. The 14' ceilings is so that I can someday fit a 2 post lift in there.

on my Current garage, i had to modify the Door so it would go way up in order to clear the truck, and i also removed the trim to give me a 1/2" or so..

FYI, i don't know about Other Cages, but Our Redline Cages are Designed so that it is no taller than the top part of the Windshield Frame.. (This was A Critical Design Element that i needed in order to keep my Baby Dry and Protected).
It also looks better with a Bikini top!

Hard Top is not an option because it sits up another few inches from the windsheild frame.

My New house is Going to Be Close, i may need to lower down my truck a little bit..

i think the ATV winch idea is great.. they have a Harbor Freight one for like $60 that should work ok, Run it through a Snatch Block and Run Thicker Synthetic Rope! This is Great for Climbing or Droping off Steep Obstacles because you can Lower down the COG of the truck!

how much lift and what size tires are you running?

That Redline cage at Roundup shure looked purrty. Wish I could drop $1500 on one. Gonna go withan MT kit or have it
done locally from scratch. I did figure out how to get the garage door all the way back so I have just the lintel restricting me.
