Urine Trouble!

Hey ONSC Family!

Name is Jeremy and I’m a long time lurker here on this site. Well, my 40 was down for a bit with some minor problems but it’s healed now. Unfortunately when I went to fill the radiator today, I opened the hood and a tenant looked at me as if to say “can you please close the door? It’s really bright…”. From the looks…. And…. Smells… this guy has made a home on my air cleaner.

So. Anyone have a remedy for removing the smell of rat urine from a 40 engine bay? How about an 80? I got rat urine in that engine bay as well (already tossed out the formerly pristine under hood fire shield).

Clean it. Cover the alternator. Use a degreaser or APC (All purpose cleaner) and spray down the engine bay and scrub with a soft bristle brush and rinse off with low pressure water. I owned a detailing business for a while and this was my method. A good degreaser or other APC should remove the smell. You will get wet/soapy as you will likely need to wash from the bottom also. Avoid using a pressure washer unless it is very low pressure (<1000psi nozzle) or you hold it far away so as to not push water into connectors and other electrical components or into the intake tract. Take special care around the carb inlet and mounting gaskets if they are not fresh and properly sealed.

You can also remove some components and wash them off of the truck like the intake, air cleaner, and other removable components that may have rat urine on them.

Nature's Miracle enzyme cleaner removes dog and cat urine smell. I imagine it would do the same with your tenants'.

If you can, get some intense direct sunlight in the engine bay. UV will help with eliminating the smell along with the rec’s above. I’d do this one last. It’ll also help dry your previous efforts. Cover whatever connections, plastic you don’t want hit by the UV though.

Clean it out and put some fox urine in there. It'll keep the rats from coming back.

I don't know how well this would work in your situation but it works well in an enclosed space such as vehicle interiors. I would use as directed and find a place for the container (I used a mason jar) like the battery tray and close the hood. Leave it for at least 24 hours and see if that works. You may need a second application because of the urine smell and lack of enclosed space.

I used this in my Taco with excellent results. After 15 years the Taco certainly didn't have that new car smell. This product has a new car plastic/chemical smell. While the odor isn't lavender and roses it's better than 15 years of funk and certainly better than rat urine.
