I'd put cap on and drive. Keep in mind this happen because wheel bearing not set up and maintained properly. I'll bet your bearings are loose and you now have metal particles in the bearings. Keep speed down and pay attention to sound and feel (no radio). Alone I'd chance the drive home, with family in truck I'd fix first. Or use rental car as chase vehicle.It's the CV axle at the drive flanges. I had my wife pop it into drive for a quick second, and can clearly see the axle spinning in the stationary flange on the driver's side.
I'm glad it's not something worse. Should I still disconnect stuff for the drive home? Or just leave the cap off and let it do whatever slight spinning it might do?
Disconnecting front propeller shaft if you find it necessary to drive with CDL on, would be good idea. But I have driven with CDL on, on dry pavement.
