Hey there, I have been going to town on wiring my 70 fj40. I’m almost done but I have a few questions. Currently my hazards don’t work and I’m still troubleshooting. I’m sure I will figure it out but on the firewall on the inside by the passanger footwell, I have a relay and a weird plug. I was curious if anyone could help me identify which both are. I’ve been through my Haynes manual but can’t find anything. Thanks.

The relay (blue) then to the left is that weird plug. I can pull the black cap off and it has two prongs.

Also side question, my car never came with a rear heater, but in the dash I have a female connector with two blue input wires. I believe these are for the rear heater. Do the cars come with wiring in case you wanted to add one yourself?

Blinker relay. Might even control the hazards as well.

Edit, you say passenger side? My flasher relay is on the driver side on my 74.

What color are the wires at the connector?

Interesting. When I put my blinkers on, I can feel the relay on the drivers side click. So I’m assuming this relay is for hazards.
Hazard flasher is the one above your left foot. Turn signal flasher is the one you show in photo. That is the stock mounting bracket behind it. Stock flasher switch should look like this.

Ok very helpful thanks. So what relay is this one by my clutch

pedal, and why is it the one that clicks when my signals are on?

You see the oem flasher behind the one with wire nut, the one in the bracket ? That was probably replaced by the wire nut one, FWIW on my 70' 40 that is the blinker flasher as well, I do not have hazards ( trail rig sorta) so I cant say on if the pass side one is for hazards.

This is for the flashers. My 68's wiring was a mess when I bought it in 1974. Got everything figured out except the flashers. Finally took to the local dealer. Quoted me a couple hour just to replace a fuse hidden up under the dash. Didn't have the funds at that time and figured I could live without flashers. Some time later I found that fuse exposed when I removed the center cowl vent to clean it out. This was by accident. I brought this up in a number of threads over the years. I don't have any FSM or Hagnes manual which wasn't available yet. Never searched to see if the actual location of fuse is addressed. Or is it just shown in the wiring diagram.

Maybe PO bypassed the wires in the harness that lead from the column turn signal switch to the turn signal flasher and connected directly to the turn signal switch at bottom end of steering column.
Are there wires connected to the hazard relay/flasher in the back, clutch pedal is blocking view.

I’m now moving onto the horn wiring and I have taken the steering wheel off. There are two ground wires. Is this normal? I might be missing a small spacer too.

I am a little confused how the wires are supposed to sit in there to make ground contact when horn button pressed.

How you tried looking at the online catalogs, they usually have a good schematic pic of such assemblies. Even the crappy Chilton has a pic IIRC. Did you check the free download manual posted in this section?

I sorta remember a circular copper ring under my steering wheel that acted as a continuous wiper contact but it’s a ‘75

Metal ring with wire should be glued to the rubber bushing that is in the steering column ( #6 in stolen photo), the two green wires with red stripe should be connected. Green/red wire travels down steering column then exits near bottom ( see red arrow), then connects to female bullet connector with green red striped wire. Should be hanging down below cluster.

Thank you. I did exactly that a few hours ago. The female connector was kinda hidden behind the dash frame.

Was this the mysterious under dash in-line fuse? If so can you photograph the location and look?
Sure when I get home I’ll take some pictures. My 15 amp fuse that was in there was completely busted. And I took a spare 20 amp for testing purposes. Was kinda tricky to get it to fit.

Here is the fuse location.

This brings me to another question, found another unconnected wire, which is the same color and location as the F.D light..not sure what it’s for.

Additionally, I have two loose blue/white female connectors coming out of the firewall.

From my research, this should go to the speed detector. When I look this up, I cannot find anything close to what it should be. Btw this a 1970.
