I'm trying to psych myself up to replace my Wildpeak AT3Ws later this week. I loved those tires and I'm a bit disappointed that they're no longer available. I might have bought another set last winter if I had known. Regardless, the time has come after about ~40k hard miles on the Falkens.

I'm seriously considering the Toyo Open Country A/T III. The weight difference with the newer Falken is substantial and I wouldn't mind recovering a couple MPG if possible. I like the ones I've seen posted here although they don't seem quite as popular as the Falkens. I'm sure they're fine, but when facing 4 more years with an unknown tire, I get nervous.

Not knowing what tire size you're looking for, have you looked at the BFG KO3's? I don't know what they weight but I know they're an outstanding tire in ALL conditions and last 60K miles. You can also get them at Costco, if you're a member, which comes with being a wee bit cheaper, a good warranty and locations nation wide.

I'm looking at 265/70R17 for my unlifted baby.

I had BFG KO2s on my previous two trucks and found the Falkens a breath of fresh air. I know the KO3 is its own thing, like the new Wildpeaks in that respect, but I don't think I'm going back to BFG again. They were just sooooo bad on cold/wet/snow, especially in my Jeep XJ when in RWD. A rainy commute on KO2s felt like black ice compared to Falkens.

I really liked the old Yokohama Geolander AT-X about a decade ago, but looks like they've left that segment entirely. It was also pretty tame compared to these more aggressive ATs, but they were a really good compromise on a heavily abused crossover.

The K03 have allegedly fixed the poor wet/snow performance, but we'll see. I too have been planning my next tire - it'll likely be the Toyo Open Country AT3 like you are planning or the MT Baja Boss AT. The Toyo for weight (they seem to be a few lbs lighter than any other tire in that size) and the Baja Boss for almost-R/T like performance in a package that works great in snow.

As for the Yokohamas, I think this is their new offering: GEOLANDAR A/T4™ - https://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/geolandar-a-t4?gad_source=1

I'm going to pull the trigger on ordering the Toyos at lunch. I figure, if they were really any worse than the others, than guys like Roody and Bananadalorian would have found their flaws by now.

That's a good looking Yoko, but I can't find it at America's Tire Co. They're showing a Geolandar X-AT as the comparable model, but they're heavy, expensive and faster wearing than the alternatives.

One other consideration for me is that I seldom kept my previous cars this long. I typically bought older used cars, replaced the tires once, and then sold it before they wear out. My wife wants to keep the GX until we're both old and grey, so this might not even be my last set. Variety is the spice of life, so even if I don't fall in love with Toyo, it'll still be nice to cross compare another brand on the same platform.

Looking forward to your thoughts on those Toyos as I'm considering them for my next set. Their combo of lower weight, well reviewed on and off-road performance, and longevity, stand out to me. I was also looking at the Nitto recon grapplers, and am a fan of Nitto, but since they are both from the same company, I can go either way.

Falken's website is showing a 1lb increase per tire from AT3W to AT4W in 265/70/17, both in SL and LT tires. Is that considered a large weight increase?

edit: re-reading, are you comparing weights of the Toyo and the Falken?

Falkens were already on the heavy side, Toyo on the light side. This new version widened the gap even further, but I'm not even sure how to consider that stat.

On the one hand, weight will obviously impact acceleration, braking, and mileage. On the other, it might be thicker sidewalls and deeper tread adding the weight, so it could go to positive attributes as well. I air down pretty often, so I would be worried if Toyo users were reporting more sidewalk damage and blowouts than Falkens, but I just haven't run across that in reviews. Honestly I'm just overthinking it, and since didn't place my order at lunchtime I can now agonize over it for another day.

Haha i'm going through the same agony at the moment and I'm new to the A/T world so I was genuinely curious if that was a large difference, and then I realized you were comparing the two different brands which makes much more sense.

Just installed 09 GX 470 wheels in graphite wrapped in Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires. They ride sooo much better than the KO2s on the 18 inch wheels. It's sitting on a mild inch and a half Dobinsons lift.

K-Dub, agree with you. For how often I air down and the terrain I travel, I would be very concerned if a tire was light. I need that extra sidewall protection and tread depth.

@vegasfj40 what is your slider setup? it makes it look so much more aggressive on the side profile.

edit: also and tire size?

I’ve had the Toyo AT3s 265/65/18 for just over 30k miles. They have handled mild fire roads and Midwest snow no problem for 3 trouble-free years. They are down to 7-9/32 so this will likely be the last year..? I’ll be moving to 265/70/18 next and the AT3s are top of the list currently.

Sliders are Metaltech. Tire size is 265 70 17. The new Wildpeaks seem to run big for the size. These are taller than the same size KO2s I had on there. The lift is mild enough that it doesnt affect the KDSS or panhard bar angle.

I'm a doofus.

I just checked the tires again and I've still got a couple millimeters of tread left above the wear bars. I looked at them while airing up after a trip with more wheelspin than usual and talked myself into needing new tires. They're not giving 100% anymore, but I'm going to hold out until closer to winter before I upgrade. Thank goodness I didn't actually order new tires!

See y'all back here in a couple months.

Does anyone have pictures of some Toyo AT3's on their stock wheels? Looking at 275/65/18's for the wife's car and I can't make a decision between the AT3's and KO3's. The sidewalls of the Toyos just don't look as aggressive as I'd like but I've never seen them wrapped on a GX with stock wheels. TIA!

Also want to add the Toyo RT Trails. If any of you have run them and have picture of them on the GX on stock wheels that'd be awesome!
