This is something that I've been meaning to do for some time, put together a secondary tool kit to grab when I'm heading off pavement.
So what I'd like to do is see what the consensus is on what and/or how many tools to carry along when wheeling/overlanding.
I'd like to have a few categories:
Just minimal Metric tools (okay so I can be a little narcissistic and let the Jeeps fend for themselves). I don't need every bloody size metric socket in every depth and point (6/12 point) in every drive size (1/4, 3/8 or 1/2).
So for this section I know we must have:
Hand tools:
  • 3/8" Drive
    • drive ratchet
    • Various adapters: 1/4" to 3/8"; 3/8" to 1/2"; 3/8" to 1/4"; 1/2" to 3/8"

  • Blood clotting material (may be in a trauma kit)
  • Cynoacrylate (yes, superglue) for closing wounds. You can even get medical grade, but I've always just used what's off the shelf.
  • Neosporin, if it's not already in your kit
  • Band-aids, keep extra, there usually is never enough in a first aid kit.
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors, if you don't already have a set on you.
  • Sutures (if you think you have the stomach to do it)
  • Smelling salts (may be in trauma kit)

Any other categories??

I will try to edit this post as people respond with additional items.
I know this is a very incomplete list, but I just banged this out to get it started.
The biggest question is what are the essential sockets needed on our rigs? I know we don't need to carry an entire Crsftsman 1500 tool Mechanics tool chest. So just how little can we get away with and still be able to self service most issues on the trail, excluding broken axles, cracked heads, blown diff's?
Perhaps a trailer to haul this stuff

I'm putting my kit together, and I cross-referenced yours above, which is amazing, with the Overland Outfitters Toyota kit and about 10-20 YouTube videos. A lot of the tools are just moving from my garage tools, so they aren't ideal or new. I'm no mechanic but don't want to be a liability. Thoughts?

Great job putting this together!
  • I probably forgot about ratchets, assuming if you have sockets, well....
  • I would advise against a digital anything for your tools unless you want to keep a maintenance calendar to change batteries. Personally, analog (click, click) for a torque wrench.
  • Most of the tools in my trail bag are either Harbor Freight or Amazon with very high ratings. I don't need Proto, Snap-on, Matco. I just need something to get me out of my situation, and if it breaks, I don't care so long as it gets me home. In short most my tools are expendable. My "good" tools stay at home in the tool chest.
  • I also try to avoid redundancy so I have impact sockets that I'll use for the 1/2" socket set.
  • I forgot about listing a multi bit driver set, but I do have one in my kit with torx, allen and various cross tips and flats.
  • Fuses are cheap and small enough to just keep one of each size which may mean at most a dozen different fuses.
  • One hammer is fine or for me I use the back of my hatchet.
  • Just get on piece of pipe that fits over anything you have for a leverage and double it as a pry bar.
  • For wiring, just have some medium gauge wire, wire strippers and tape. Just enough to get you home to do it right.
  • I don't carry extra nuts and bolts, just because there is such a wide range of fasteners used, even if you did, chances are you won't have the right size when needed.
  • Should have some short of marker (Sharpie) anyways in your center console.
  • YES! Get an OBDII Bluetooth. You can get tire pressures and tire temp's for each tire, see codes, both trans temp's, etc.
  • I don't carry any of the adhesives you've listed since I'd prefer a mechanical fix over a chemical fix.
  • I carry duct tape, good enough.
  • The zip ties (cable ties) I carry are about 12" long and reusable. Just press the tab and they can be removed and used again.
One thing to consider when putting this together, is you don't want to be redundant, don't carry the same size sockets in different drives and depths, adhesives, pick one adhesive that will do it all. Same for tape. Go through your list and consider that, "If I have this, do I still need to carry that?"

On another note, when off roading, you should ALWAYS go with at least one other person if the trail has any difficulty at all, excluding fire and gravel trails.
With two vehicles, if the other person is even remotely competent and carries some gear, you should never have to call Matt's Off Road for recovery.
Tools are a personal thing, and a list for one person may not be the ideal list for another. Yeah there are basic tools EVERYONE should carry all the time, but a person who's a professional mechanic will have a more complete set of tools than myself who just tinkers.
So take that all into consideration, that you don't need every tool and size made.

Again good job on putting this together.
Hope this helps!

Permatex Gasket Maker - I haven't needed it on the GX, but I used it this past weekend to seal a Chevy Trail Boss differential cover that got caught on a rock and deformed enough to lose all the differential oil.

Good list, thank you.
high temp silicone RTV can plug all sorts or leaks, etc.

I actually do have an ammo can and keep it in one of the slots on my rear bumper instead of a 5 gal Jerry can. I forget what size ammo it was for but it's about the size of an 5 gal can and I keep some of my recovery gear in there.
50 cal. ammo can

NOAA rescue beacon, handheld and mobile HAM + Forest Service and other gov channels radios. (Anyone can transmit on any channel in an emergency.) Winter down mummy bags, xcountry skis except in summer. Gear for hiking out in very bad weather. (We have unpredicted storms.) Chains.

Agreed, I do have a Yaesu FTM-400 AND I also keep a handheld in my glove. This comes in very handy when caravanning and need to stay in touch with when on the road. Also hiking and someone stays at base camp, they can monitor the radio while the hiker, e.g. myself have the handheld.
I also have the mobile wired to my house battery so I don't have to have the ignition on for the radio to be on.

Personally, rather than a meter, I'd go with a 3/8 and 1/2, or at least 1 or the other and an adapter to the size. If i were overlanding, I'd want to torque my lugs to spec with a beefy torque wrench

Most of my tool bag sockets are 3/8" drive, with the exception of the 19, 21, 22, and 35 mm axle nut sockets that are 1/2" drive. I have a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter and a 1/2" M18 mid-torque impact. They'll do in a pinch and I can make things work without having to carry too many different types of sockets/ratchets/etc.
