I have a 1971 FJ40 with the 1F 3 speed engine. I am new to these cars and this forum. I have taken it to a garage today to have it looked over and they have told me there is no clutch (the gears grind into 1st and reverse) which is why I took it in. It’s been restored within the last 300 miles.

Is there anywhere in the UK who specialise in these cars so I can get a second opinion.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don’t know where to start. I am based in london but happy to take the car wherever is best.

Thanks in advance

1st and reverse on a 3 speed are not syncronized. Your 3 speed trans is going to grind going into 1st and reverse. You can bump 2nd or 3rd to slow or stop the input shaft, then go into 1st. Try to match engine speed with gear or double clutch it.

Oh, and welcome to the site. You'll eventually get the hang of it.

I would bleed the clutch system and check the adjustments. No one would redo/restore a LC and not put in a clutch if it was worn badly enough to fail in 300 miles.

You need books. Chilton is better nothing. Free downloads here

@45Dougal is in Bristol, he is active on here
these are very simple machines, don't overthink them

Thank you guys, I appreciate the help. I have the car with a garage but am not sure they are used to working on these cars. Does anyone have any recommendations for a specialist? IR Cradock have a 3-6 month waiting list. I am based in SW London.

Thanks again

I don't know how prevalent FJ4X's are in the UK, but I wouldn't think there's a huge amount, so finding someone focusing on Land Cruisers only would be difficult.
There is a UK website referenced in the clubhouse section. You might reach out to them. I would think you could find a Rover specialist who would be familiar with the basic systems. I would get the physical Factory Service Manuals for your 40, so whatever shop you find can reference them. This website is far reaching and and it's knowledge is deep.
The most active UK member is @45Dougal. You might reach out to him.

I definitely recommend the factory service manuals. One for chassis and one for engine.
Check that your clutch is correctly bled and adjusted as mentioned.
What's the problem with the starter motor?

The garage advised the clutch is high and needs high revs to get into gear. Also the starter motor gets really hot causing a lot of vibrations from the engine and then drains juice from the battery causing the car not to start.

Sounds like the clutch needs adjusting rather than replacing - follow the process in the factory manual.

How long are you cranking to get the starter hot? If your clutch is dragging then this will put more load on the starter obviously.

Look up Adam at LAR4X4 down in Kent, have used him for my 80 but knows his stuff, funny my imported FJ40 just barfed all the clutch fluid from the slave cylinder this morning so need to ask some questions!!
