Ratio?

this can be used for disc brakes on earlier drum axles, same knuckles out as a 60 series

Actually, since it’s a +90 axle (8” diff) they can’t. The trunion bearings are about .25” further apart then a pre-90 axle so it doesn’t work.
However one could put the whole axle into a 40 pretty easily, in which case would be great for a pre-68 ball/claw truck.

didn't realize there is a difference, I thought all 70 series axles were similar to 60 series
they changed with the 80 series intro?

Spindles/wheel bearing hubs/birfields are interchangeable.

1985-90 70 series knuckles/arms are the same as the “standard” (79-90) large pattern stuff, besides having 6 bolts for the felts/retainers vs 8 on a 40/60.

1990-97 70 knuckles are their own unique deal. Unfortunately I learned this mid-install after buying everything new OEM for a disc conversion on a 72 last year.

At quick glance the parts look the same, the difference is super minor. It’s the overall height of the knuckle and the depth of the pin on the steering arm/cap.

This is still a great deal for someone with a pre-68. Just put the whole axle in.

Once again, really good tech buried in the classifieds forum. Thanks for the education Matt.😊

Sorry for the hijack Liam  I would buy this if I was local.

No worries Matt. I bought this from Joe Katana with the intention of swapping the whole axle under my FJ40. He informed me this is a 8” HD high pinion axle and would not be a direct knuckle swap, but that’s good tech on the exact differences. Only reason I’m selling is because I acquired more disk brake conversion parts than I need.

Just to belabor this a bit more, since I have to be spoon-fed sometimes, if you put this under an FJ40:

Remove the sway bar (there seems to be 2 in the picture?) and discard.
The FJ40 leaf springs would bolt to the perches that are already there.
The steering rod would fit to the FJ40 center arm.
Connect the plumbing for the brake calipers.
I'm not seeing the shock mounts, but you would need to bolt those on.

Then good to go!

While the width is the same or very close the spring perch locations would be wrong for a 40 series and need to be moved.

I have seen these sway bars retrofitted to 40’a a few times (usually in Colombia).

The easiest way to do the steering would be to use the 40 Tie rod and relay rod and connect to the 70 steering arms with the TRE taper shims that Cruiser Outfit sells. The 70 relay rod is longer and bigger taper and won’t work with the 40 center arm.

Yes you would need to weld shock mounts to this housing.
