Hello,

I’ve been lurking on here for a while and have picked up some really good info to help improve my LJ70

Mines a UK supplied 1992 LJ70 with a 2L-T engine, its about 175,000 miles, the engine has been serviced by a landcruiser specialist and I’m told is sound, its had some work done by previous owners like a straight through 2.5” exhaust and any bodywork rust taken care of, so considered ok to start making some modest improvements to the engine.

In my 15 month ownership, I‘ve had the pump & injectors refurb’d, manual boost control, boost gauge, pyrometer, profiled boost pin, boost spring and custom intercooler.

All of the above makes it much more driveable, I get 18-20 psi and EGT’s are ok,

I’m not mechanical so all of this work has been done for me by others, either local mechanics or specialist 4x4 Workshops.

My next focus is the turbo. Having read a lot of stuff online, I’m pretty certain I want to swap the stock CT20 for a TD04

I’m thinking a TD04L 12T or similar from Volvo or Saab as they have the 4 bolt manifold.

My question is, can anyone who has done the TD04 swap help me out with some detail on what parts, adaptors and any work is involved so I can take it all in to the workshop and get them to do the job……..i.e a shopping list and full instructions.

I’m a huge fan of these old 70’s, it’s been a bit of a learning curve for me but I’m enjoying the process and am having a lot of fun driving it.

When I did a CT26 to TD04 on a 13BT I got my adapter from this eBay shop.

I used the same shop for my Holset on my BJ74. Works great. I didn’t do eBay, just called direct.

The ebay customfabshop adaptors will cost about £150 (£175 for stainless) $190/$220 with P&P to UK.

I think possible to have them fab'd locally for less.......I see there was a pdf of a CAD file for the Subaru TD04 so I might see about going this route, anyone tried ?

There do seem to be more Subaru (3-bolt) options available for the Turbo as well

Any decent fab shop would be able to do this if you have the files or info. I was going to do the same thing locally, but by the time I found a matching file, found a shop that would take it and have them set it up, it was the same or more than the shop I used.
Not to mention they may never make one so it who knows if it’s right or not. That said it’s not a hard part but saving $25-$50 may cost me $250+ if I have to re do it. The shop online sells a ton of those.

Being overseas complicates the shipping, but might be worth emailing/calling the shop to see options but I can’t imagine you will be much cheaper than $150 shipped. I think I paid $107 shipped 3 states away for an adapter he hadn’t made yet.

apparently this is available as a kit, but its 850+tax

The kit includes:
n.1 TURBOCHARGER
n.1 OIL INPUT TUBE
n.1 OIL OUTLET TUBE
n.1 TURBO GASKET KIT
n.1 DOWNPIPE
n.1 GAS INPUT FLANGE BETWEEN COLLECTOR AND TURBINE
n.1 BUSH
n.1 ACTUATOR
n.1 STICKERS SET

But seems expensive compared to DIY version......TD04 turbo 200, adaptor 150, lines, gaskets, etc 100.......total 450 ?

*roughly equivalent pricing $ / £ / Euro
