Were you in tow/haul mode?

Yes I was
I will say too that was the only time I hated the 6 speed, it was shifting in and out of 5 and 6 a lot, got annoying.

Also just for reference, a friend towed about the same weight on that trip too with his duramax diesel and he was only averaging 13mpg. So 10-11mpg sucks but it's not bad considering, this year though I will leave early and take my time getting down there. Slow and steady show help the mpg's

What year was the Duramax? My buddy used to have a 2005 Dodge 3500 with the Cummins and it would get 18mpg no matter if he was empty of towing a loaded trailer.

I believe the truck was 3 or 4 years old, he was running a little bigger then stock tires too, which would hurt the gas mileage a little.
But the cummings is a much better engine. My brother had one and it was the same, 17-18mpg empty of full

Sad to hear, but how much cooler will it be when you get the 45 back together and have to go to the lumber yard or some other truck needed chore

The 40 can haul. Before I tore it apart I picked up a yard of stone dust in it.
