Thanks bjowett.

E, I was around when all those steel wheels threads were going and read them all back then. I searched and read all 'em all again last night. Problem is, all the pics are gone. I think it was from when Woody upgraded the software or something.

second page photo of tundra wheels on my rig

the wheels in your ebay thing seem more Tacos than Tundra, probably. Don't remember seeing them listed as for Tundra. Or could be older? Check weight issue, though, if it's Taco they may not be rated high enough?

Thanks E. I checked that one again. I skipped over your post with the pics cause those wheels didn't look like anything I'm interested in--so I missed the fact that they were steel. As to weight, though I need wheels to fit an 80 series rear, it's for my FJ60, which is a bit lighter than an 80, but probably still more than a Taco...

On another note, I see there was some hubbub about you putting the 285s on the 7" wheel. I am guessing the same sort of issue comes up with larger tires? I'm going to be running the 315s... Probably need an 8" in that case eh. I want the extra width anyway. Looks like I'll pass on those wheels. Thanks for the help.

well, from what I understand, it is just fine to use 7" wheels, I read from several folks who said they ran 7" with a 285 for years with no problem. Some others said it was actually a good thing. Then when I measured the sidewall to sidewall width, I ended up with only 0.3" less than the same tires on 8" IIRC. So just fine for me. Saved me over $400 over OEM steelies and over $200 over aftermarket steelies. Of course, 315 are 30mm wider too, so 7" is proportionally narrower for those.

The backspacing on the stock Tundra wheels is 4.5 inches. The wheels are identical to those used on the Tacoma.

285's will fit the 7" wheel but some shops may refuse to mount them. In addition the footprint will not be as flat when you air down.

Goodyear says that the minimum wheel width they approve for 285/75R16 MTRs is 7.5 inches. They have narrower MTRs that they suggest for 7 inch rims.

They fit... The steel on all of Toyota's current spare wheels is thinner than the styled steel units that they install on the vehicles. However, the stamped design allows them to be strong. I do not see a thickness difference between any of the styled wheels.

My center diff just exploded from looking at that pic bjowett, I hope you didn't try to drive like that.

brian, are those the military spec michellins?

Give me some credit, will ya? :flipoff2: It was just a trial fit to see how it looked... pic is old... they are the Michelins of which you speak, 325/85R16 = 38.5". Beutiful beefy tires, just too heavy, about 150lbs+/corner.

Dang those are heavy  . I have been looking around for a set of the XZLs but no one has them. I guess the military is getting all they can produce right now.
