Finished building the base today. All I need to do is figure out where I'm going to bolt it down... I'm still waiting to hear from Samco on tubing. Sam said he could get me some for cheap, but haven't heard back yet. Going with 1" .095

not yet, just waiting to hear back from Sam (Samco) on the tubing. I built the base out of 5/16 plate and a section of 4"x4 3/16" squared tubing. Welded the nuts to the top plate before closing it up. Drilling 3/4" holes through that plate was not fun....

Nothing against Sam (love the guy, have him do some small stuff for me from time to time) but you might find a better price on tubing from Metal Masters.

Not sure if you know of them or not....
Just throwing that out there.

X2.

ok, I'll call them up.

I was told on a Rover forum that .095 is overkill, and that .065 would be enough. What do you guys think?

I couldn't find it but there is a table of strengths for different sizes and types of tube somewhere on the web.

I think DOM is about 40% stronger than HREW.

Your owners manual should have a max weight limit for the roof.

With those numbers you should be able to noodle out which material and which thickness you need.

For a roof rack, .065 is plenty. The weight adds up quick. My rack is made out of .065 and although it is bigger than what you are building, it is very bulky and would be very hard for one person to handle. That is why I hang from the ceiling in the garage, load it and unload it with straps. My back appreciates it.

Hmm, what size die(s) do you have for this bad boy? :hmm:

I ordered a 1" OD 3" CLR die set with it cause i'm planning on building Rover roof racks with it.

I'm going to call around for the .065 tomorrow.

Do it in aluminum man !

Spotted you hauling some tubing home today... AFAIK you are the only Yellow Rover in town with a roof rack and all the goodies....

Caught a quick glimpse as you turned west on Glendale off McCarron about 4:40ish today.

Rig looks awesome in person.

He must have gone to Metal Masters.

yup, that was me. I got off work early and headed over to Samco for 100' of .065. I forgot to stop by Praxair and see if my new helmet was in, so I was heading back over there. What were you driving?

He must have gone to Metal Masters.

Went and saw Sam. I can't wait to start on this, but my new full time job isn't giving me much freedom...

Looking good. Takes a little while to get the hang of it (I still suck) but when you do, it's amazing what can be done.

Nice job. I would really like a bender will by my next big tool purchase. Are you finding the technique fairly easy to get down?
