I am selling my FJ60 and am looking for a 90-97 toyota truck for a DD. I have read all the posts about the 3.0 and the 3.4 but what about the 4 popper 22re? I do not tow anything and the gas mileage seems great, but are they turds to drive?

If your getting out of a 60, I think you will enjoy the extra performance of the 22re ;)

They arent a bad little engine.

The 22RE is second only to the 2F as the most bomb proof reliable engine Toyota has ever made. I've owned four vehicles, mini's and Celica's, with 22RE's, and they just won't quit.

22s really snort (for a 4 cyl.) and if geared right can accomplish some truly incredible climbs. Take for example the dump bump in Moab. Toy minis dominate the show there.

Well, first, if you are looking 1990-97, you also have the choice of the 3rzfe 2.7L motor found in the Taco. Having owned a 22r, a 3rzfe, and currently still own a pair of 22re, I can say you can't go wrong. Great motors, especially that 2.7L. Talk about a strong 4 cyl. If you can go to 1998 you will get a better ignition too.

The 22re can be tweeked quite a bit. Both of my motors have ported heads, headers, 2.25" exhaust, and cams. One has a balanced lower end that really brings the motor alive. But, I still think the 3rzfe is stronger.
