The other day some friends and I were negotiating a couple of hills that required some crawling to get up (25 degree + slope according to my inclinometer) and as soon as I had engaged it into 4 low it acted ok until one of the wheels began to spin and started making this horrid grinding noise like it wasn't in gear. I stopped, backed up and re-put it into 4 low, I tried to go up again and it did the same thing. I tried to shift it over one more time, and viola it engaged. We got under the truck after we got home and saw what looked like a bar where the 4wd linkage to the transfer case is, it appeared as though it was rubbing when it was trying to go into 4 low, but after putting a hand on it we found out it was not. I don't know if it is inside the transfer case, or something with the shifting into 4 low, but I have to shift and drive around, shift again and it will engage if I am lucky.... Anyone else had a similar problem?

I had a similiar problem in Baja one time. I haven't needed to put it in 4 low in a while. It almost felt like the lever wouldn't go far enough over to engage. I thought maybe the lever was adjustable, or something. I am eager to hear others feedback for your problem.

Thanks,
Dan

I too had some issues with my T-case. My drivetrain had been shifted slightly when I put in the V8. When I got on something steep, there was just enough extra shift to put pressure on the shift lever as it was hitting the transmission tunnel cover. I had to do some cutting, and I bent the shift lever so that it was away from the edge of the hole. I also positioned the bracket, or shift gate that is bolted onto the trans so that it was pressed tightly against the shift lever, holding the shifter in position. Problem solved. I also have had a seized heim joint on the linkage, check that. If either of your outputs are loose, this will cause an engagement issue as well, usually manifest when trying to engage the front drive more so than the four-low.
