Next Saturday Aug the 15th my son and I are traveling for our annual summer trip. This time around we will be traveling up the coast from Los Angeles to Seattle and then cutting across to Glacier then Yellowstone and coming home the long way to North Rim Grand Canyon then Vegas to LA.

This trip I wanted to try and meet some mudders along the way that I've chatted with and would love to match a face to a screen name if you will. Here is the current itinierary:
Glacier National Park - Google Maps

Updated map:

I will be bring my SPOT and detailing as much as I can. If you happen to be along the route, let me know and I'll try and meet up. Any suggestions along the route would be greatly appreciated because for the majority of it I will be winging it.

Now onto the "tech" portion of the thread...

Issue 1:
I just got a P0171: System too Lean (Fuel Trim): Trouble Areas: air intake (hose loose); fule line pressure--leak; injector blockage; heated O2 sensor malfunction; mass air flow meter; engine coolant temp. sensor.

The only thread I found on it was about a crack in the intake hose. Well mine is brandy spanking new and its totally intact and not loose so now I get the joy of trying to hunt down the issue. When the CEL came on I cleared the code using the ScanGauge and it hasn't come back yet.

Issue 2:
Last week the truck developed a really bad sway in the rear. No weight has changed and at first I suspected it was the typical Lexus wobble at speed but this was different. It happened going straight on the highway and it was as if someone was rocking the truck back and forth. Not a sway, a hard rocking. I checked the shocks and sure enough I have one that is leaking pretty bad. I have some shocks coming my way but wanted to find out if I should be looking at something else as well while I am there. BTW my suspension is bone stock.

Issue 3:
The rear brakes are gone and so are the rotors. I just ordered new rear rotors from brakeperformance.com and I already have a set of rear pads. The job itself should be pretty simple. What is strange is that I am getting a metallic rubbing noise when I am pulling away from a stop. It goes for a second and stops and only comes back when pulling from a stop. I suspect its just drag on the remaining pad but not sure until I get the wheels off. I just can't take off the wheels until I get all the parts off. Anything else I should be looking for?

Items I need to finish the install for in the next freaking week:
• Finish the evap canister relocation
• Actually finish my breather hose extensions/manifold
• Rear brakes
• Finish the CB install that I never finished
• Get supports and floor installed into my new large ConFer rack
• Hope a RTT comes on sale for under $300 :flipoff2:

Having a full-time job now cuts into all my fun project time. I still haven't finished my power steering mod, my fire extinguisher mod, the Helton shower nor my drawers.....et al. Ugh.

Can't wait to get on the road.

Looks like you got some issues right now with the ole Lexy...ah well, who doesn't lol

have a great trip, i envy you. my pops and i do something similar every summer, but never that long, that's for sure. you guy just drive and camp, or get some fishing in?

also, where u stoppin in the bay area?

Sweet! Sounds like a great trip! Hit us up (JSC) in Southern Oregon (right on the i5 corridor), glad to throw a BBQ or something in route to your destination :D

Yeah my kid is 11 now and is finally enjoying long trips.

The idea is to drive/explore during the day and camp at night. Last year I did a lot of night driving and we missed out on a lot because of it. I'd love to do some fishing but I don't fly fish (don't know how) so its hook and bait for us. Problem is Yellowstone is fly fish only for the majority of the park. So we'll miss out on some fun.

In the bay area I will be in Oakland to have dinner with one of my old clients Michelle Kaufmann Designs then visiting my aunt and uncle in Tiburon. Should be in the bay area all day Sunday.

I'd start with cleaning the MAF...carefully!

The P0171 code may come back soon because the ECU looks for three trips before throwing the code to cut down on false alarms. My P0171 was resolved by careful cleaning of the MAF using an electronics cleaner to clean both the sensor wire and the temperature bulb. The MAF is also the easiest sensor to get to so try it first. If you don't have time to wait for three trips to see if the code comes back, then clean the O2 sensors too. they are $$$$ so you might want to try cleaning before replacing.

Good Luck!

Well I doubt it would be the MAF being as its only about 2 or 3 months old from LANDTANK. BUT that being said I will still go through it and see. Never know.

Ugh:
89465-69085 Front O2 sensor $175.16 list
89465-69105 Rear O2 sensor $175.16 list

The 2nd part number is incorrect.

They can be had together in a set: 89465-60110 for about $210 from American.

Whoops, yeah I copied the wrong number, edited it now to prevent confusion for those coming back to this thread.

Joey, my family will be taking a road trip to Yellowstone in about two weeks. I just pm'ed you my schedule. Let me know...

Yeah I did her entire site development. What sucks is she closed her doors two months ago and another architecture firm in Boston bought her assets from company. I kinda got burned for a large chunk of cash due to the bankruptcy but stuff happens to the best of us. We're still friends and I'm sure we'll work together in the future. Her designs are AWESOME!!!

My wife's best friend was Gehry's personal assistant for almost two years. Funniest thing I ever saw was I was going to pick her up to go to lunch at her office. When I got there I saw Brad Pitt in there following Gehry everywhere he went like a little puppy and every time Gehry asked his assistant, my friend, to get something for him, Brad would jump up and say "I'll get it!"

Good times. :p

So enough name dropping :flipoff2:

It's never too late to learn, you know. I think my dad started me when I was like 11. You guys are going to pass right by some of the best fly fishing in all of the US as well (McCloud River, Upper Sac, Pit, Klamath --> right near Mt Shasta)

If you decide to change your route and go out the east side of Glacier through the Blackfeet reservation to Cut Bank, be wary. It's remote and some of the locals there seem to like to mess with passing tourists. It happened to me and a friend after he had warned me about it. I can pm details if you are interested. Sorry no tech but just an FYI. Sounds like an awesome road trip!
