What is the difference between a 2wd and 4wd transmission. Gm for example out of a blazer?

But is that truly the only difference?

It really depends on the trans. As mentioned above, the output shaft is often different length. a 4WD trans also generally has extra mounting tabs for a T-case.

I am putting a 5.3L an 4L60E to a stock Toyota T-case in an 89 LC. The AA adapter between the tans an T-case requires a 2WD version of the trans in order to work.

If you are considering a swap, check with the adapter company first to see which version of the ATrans they are using.

I am basically wanting to cruiser craiglist and pick things up on the cheap here and there for a possible swap in a couple of years. To me it seems like the transmission is the biggest deciding issue. 350's are plentiful so that is not an issue.

Nothing, want more power, possible better gas mileage.

IMHO Only swap that is worthwhile would be Diesel or LS1 based swap. Carbed SBC or the like isnt worth the hassle.

No got a jetta

Why do you want more power for something you only drive occasionally especially a Land Cruiser it isn't some kinda sports car. They are made to go slow and steady while providing outstanding reliabilty?

If the truck is running good I'd just leave it be and enjoy it as is.... a drivetrain swap is a big job and they always seem to take longer and cost more then one would think. I think taking out a good running 2F in favor of an old used carb'ed chevy V8 that you are just asking for a big hassle with only a marginal upside. If you 2F was bad then that would be a different story.......

just my 2cents having done quite a few engine swaps, but in the end it is your cruiser do as you wish

Another reason i would like to do it. Eventually i hope to buy a camper. I simply want to stock pile parts so that when motor does grenade i am ready. That is all. Could easily be 5yrs from now. After getting it back from josh tires are next then next biggie is off road trailer.

Even you couldn't kill a 2F they are too dumb to die :hillbilly:

Hey now. I resemble that comment :D
But alas there is also the cost factor
I wanted an LS and found a few deals but none that would allow the swap for under 3 grand which I didn't have available to spend on the truck.

And as JP said they do take longer and cost more than you planned. But hey I can do the speed limit uphill ;)

Holding speeding speed uphill is highly overtated :D I guess that is the one upsdie to where I live now...... no hills :meh:

I have to second what JP and Jason are saying, motor swaps, transmission swaps, etc take a lot longer than you expect unless you're dropping a direct replacement in the hole. The Nova took me over a year, granted I work slowly with 3 kids, but it was very slow. There are also a ton of little details to work out.

A swap could be worth it if you're going to be using your cruiser a TON. Since mine is a "toy" vehicle, my plan is to find a good 2F that I can refresh to put in mine should it ever die. Might not go Big Gay extreme build, but a freshened 2f should last a long time for my use.

I was hoping to tow the Jeep with my 62, but I'm not going to swap the good running 3fe so I can. When I had the tall skinnys 215/85/16s, I could do 85 on the interstate and maintain (I was following a vette). With the 35,s I don't get much over 70, but that's OK with me.
