We've been down that path too. Just check the Grand Cruiserneer link in my sig. Lots of time and money, but we had planned to keep her as a DD. Now the pile of problems is so deep that we got my wife a new(er) 4R to use as a DD. The Wagoneer will get finished eventually, but without the stress of doing something over a weekend and getting back together in time to go to work on Monday.

A 5.3 L or 6.0 L Vortec swap with say 4l60E trans into the 60/62 is going to run you at least $5K

Here are just a few basic average numbers:

Used motor with harness $1,500.00
Used trans $ 750.00
Trans tune up $ 150.00
Program PCM and cut down harness $ 425.00
Exhaust system $ 600.00
Trans cool lines $ 175.00
Shifter $ 250.00
Radiator $ 400.00
Intake system $ 270.00
trans to T-case adapter $ 800.00


Like I said these are basic average numbers, you'll also need:

New fuel system to accommodate 58lbs pressure required
Power steering lines
AC lines
Drive shaft mods
Radiator hoses
Exhaust manifolds (truck LM7 manifolds won't work

This is not everything you will need to do the job RIGHT

You can certainly half ass it for a lot less. Then you can work on it all the time and celebrate how much money you saved by using things like the stock radiator and fuel lines.

I sure agree that towing and uphill would be great and a LS is the top of the gas heap, but even a carbed 2F will do everthing you need as long as you are not in a hurry. With some mods (carb, cam, headers, even fuel injection) it even will do it a little better. Still if it was a daily driver and you are going to tow then go for it. AS David said I can do just about everything I want with my 2F(and yes I know it's more like big gay than stock) but really I don't feel that a v-8 would be worth the extra time and expense. Just my .02 cents Now if work will relent so that I can actually do some things with the dang thing. Ah nevermind.
