Hi all,

I have a RHD 1986 HJ61 12HT with 4 speed auto trans (A440F I believe). I recently started to notice that when going from first to second gear the shift would be delayed, and engine would rev up, then a hard shift would take place. Feels like it might be doing it from 2nd to 3rd gear as well.

Any tips on what might be causing it?

Thanks,
Stephen

Basic stuff: as always, check the fluid level when the tranny fluid is hot (not warm), and check the kickdown cable adjustment, per the FSM. Might be different for the diesel.

Is the fluid clean and pink, and have you ever pulled the pan and inspected the pan contents and the filter? How many miles or KM on the trans?

Fluid level is fine and not that old. A little dark but not bad. Never checked the kickdown cable. I'm guessing it may just need some oil on it?

Yes - kickdown cables can stick or bind, but if they are free, they need careful adjustment. Plenty of threads here on that topic - again, the diesel version of this trans. may have some variance from the gas one.

I notice that my transmission likes a minute or two of warmup on cold day. I doubt you do this, but it's best not to flog an old transmission hard before it warms up. All hydraulic devices like to be warm to operate at their peak level, especially old/tired transmissions.

Is your transmission shifting poorly when hot, or cold, or at all times?

Well it was just early in the morning when it happened. But not in the afternoon, so maybe it is sticking during cool and moist weather.
