Hi guys. I have a 93 fzj80, gas engine. After the truck sits, when I start it there is no reverse, nothing at all just like being in neutral, and when put into drive the engine stalls. I've discovered that if I Rev it up to about 2500 rpms, dump it into drive while mashing the throttle, after a few times it breaks free and seems fine. I then have reverse and all forward gears shift fine. Until I turn it off and it sits again. Torque converter? Shift solenoid? What do you think? Thanks for any help I appreciate it.

Actually yes. It was my transmission control module. After having the transmission removed and inspected, And finding no real issues with it, I had it rebuilt and the tc rebuilt as well due to worn clutches. I had a spare tcm from my parts truck installed and the problem was fixed. I had the usual windshield leak and although I had it resealed I'm thinking water got into the tcm and damaged it. Not sure on that it's just a theory. The tcm is up under the dash on the drivers side.
Not and easy thing to come by... was hoping you'd say it was the solenoids

I could be wrong here, but I don't see how the transmission malfunction could be computer. The A442F is a hydraulically controlled transmission, unlike the A343F, which has electronically controlled shift solenoids.

The 93-94 FZJ80 uses an electronically controlled A442F transmission. I think your confusing the 91-92 FJ80 that uses a hydraulically controlled A440F.

Ya sorry haha. I tried that first hoping it was the issue but it wasn't. I did find used tcm's on eBay for sale tho
Tha k you for this thread!!! Afyer you saying it was the TCM.... I unpluged the smaller harness from it and now it's better... not fixed but better... R engages...bit D starts in 2nd... but if I drop it to L it's in 1st... I'm leaving thur for the fall crawl... trailering it there... so all I need is 1st amd R... I bought the truck 3 weeks ago... That's fantastic!!! Really glad this helped someone else out!! Enjoy the fall crawl 😎👍

I bought a 93 with what groundswiper described as a disclosed issue. Car would die almost immediately when shifted into drive. Was told it was the torque converter potentially locking up. Followed this thread and changed out the TCM (Located to the left of the steering shaft bolted to the firewall). Now it doesn’t die when going into gear. The truck still has a rough idle though which I think is an unrelated issue. Tcm in my truck looked new. Didn’t seem like water had ever leaked onto it.
