I usually try my best to find things with search but i can't describe this right. I have a 97. Under the transmission, between the bell housing and the pan, facing the front of the truck, there is a "plate". That plate is made out of rubber. Can anyone tell me what this is, if it is prone to leaking, and if it needs regular replacement. Also, directly behind that and facing down is what appears to be a weep hole or something. if anyone knows what the heck that is or if anyone needs pictures of any of this stuff ill post em up. Try to find the source of an unknown old or new leak on my new to me under maintained 80. Thanks a lot in advance. oh, and i know its probably not a gasket but i am at a loss as to what to call it in the first place.

That's the inspection cover. I just keeps dirt from getting up in the bell housing. It basically lets you look at the flexplate. It doesn't really contain fluid, so it can't leak. If it's covered in oil it's either your oil pan arch or your rear main seal leaking engine oil. Both of them are very difficult fixes. The rear main seal requires removal of the transmission. The pan arch requires the engine to be raised a bit. Mine looked like yours. I cleaned it up and waited awhile. Whatever is leaking (I think it's the pan arch in my case) is doing so very very slowly.

Thank you for that, all that crap down there is full of something old and something new, mostly old fluid and road grime.mill continue to clean it up and just keep an eye on it.

That's my plan. I'll tackle it if it gets really bad or if I have to raise the engine or remove the transmission for some other reason. Just make sure to keep your oil level up.
