I changed the oil and transmission fluid in my 1994 LC (193,000 miles). I have had the vehicle for a year now and it was the first time I changed the transmission fluid. I just pulled the trans. dipstick, removed the 24 mm drain plug and let it drain completely. I poured off and measured the old fluid (burnt sienna color - definitely needed changing) and calculated 6.2 quarts.

I have read that people get about 4 to 5 quarts out. I checked the dipstick before draining and it showed the correct level.

I put 6.2 quarts back in (Dex III ATF) and the dipstick shows the correct amount.

Does this sound a little high? I will keep checking it the make sure I was not getting an incorrect reading (flat surface/Hot & Cold engine).

Thanks,

Riley

Thanks for the info!

24 mm drain plug seems a very odd size for the transmission plug. IIRC it is 12 or 14 mm for the pan on the trans. Otherwise it seems like the correct amount, everyones rig is a little different on the amount.

I am certain the trans. plug was 24 mm (I had to look around in my "big" tools drawer). There is an opening in the skid plate at the bottom of the transmission allowing access to the plug. The oil drain plug was 14 mm I believe.

I plan to drain and fill the trans. at every oil change from here on (I just need a smaller funnel for the dipstick).

That is kind of strange. Mines 12 or 14 mm too. Bet it's been drilled and tapped bigger.

More likely just different trannies. Didn't they change from 94 to 95?

Riley,

You're describing the transfercase drain bolt. Please double check!!!

No he's not; he's describing the A442F drain bolt.

THERE WAS A TRANNY CHANGE FROM 94 TO 95, CORRECT???

Alright, if I did drain the transfer case of 6.2 quarts, then poured 6.2 quarts back in through the trans. dipstick, where did it all go?

You guys now have me wondering, I am going to run home this morning and check everything out.

With this being the first time transmission fluid change for me, I am now scared.

24 mm Transmission Drain Plug

Went and checked and I do have a 24 mm transmission drain plug. I may not be the most mechanically inclined guy out there, but I have never seen a transfer case with a pan. I physically followed the transmission dipstick tube to the pan I drained. I guess at some point someone must have drilled it out and went to a larger plug. My transmission pan does have a skid plate with an open area for access to the plug.

Thanks for scaring the crap out of me...:flipoff2: !

OMFG, how many times do I have to say this???

Driley,

Everyone who doubted you has a 95-97 with an A343F tranny, while your 94 has an A442F. They are different animals; significantly different capacities, etc. Unless someone else with an A442F chimes in, it is WAY more likely that 24mm is standard on your tranny (as I think it is on my 91's A440F, which isn't here so I can't check) than it is that someone retapped it.

Gee it's fun to post up repeatedly and be ignored...

I was not ignoring you. But when you asked the question "THERE WAS A TRANNY CHANGE FROM 94 TO 95, CORRECT???", I did not feel like you were 100% certain.

I now am certain I have a 24 mm drain plug on my transmission (I touch it with my finger about 90 minutes ago).

Since this was the first time draining the transmission, I just second guessed myself.

Thanks again Curtis for the input!

That's because I *wasn't* 100% certain.

On the other hand, with the thread going in the direction it was, it certainly needed to be addressed.

Cheers,

Curtis

I'm not buying it. 24mm is to damn big. Wish somebody with a 94 would go out and check it.... slackers :flipoff2:

The next time I can borrow someone's digital camera and go under the LC, I will take a picture.

Until then, you will all have to trust me... (I did mention I touched it with my finger didn't I?).

Riley

Hmm...

Let's plot something against all the 93-94 owners ('cept Driley), since apparently there ain't none of 'em venturing in here. :hillbilly:
