FJ60 Transmission Question. When leaving in first gear (giving it gas from dead start) it feels like the transmission is shifting and you can feel the stick (shifter) moves to the right and makes a loud grinding noise. Not gear grinding noise per say but something near there! This happens in second gear as well. No other real symptoms other than it feels like the tranny isn't connected. Visual inspection shows motor mounts good and no sheered bolts etc in attachment of tranny. Thoughts welcomed. Thanks.

Most likely drivers side motor mount. And the fan hitting the shroud.

X3 on the driver's side motor mount. When it's broken the trans will shift to the right, particularly in first gear. It can also throw you out of 4WD if you're in it.

Cruiser outfitters has new ones, both oem and aftermarket. Lots of threads about replacement if you do a search. Many people claim to have replaced theirs in as little as 30 min by going from underneath... this did not make sense to me so I went in from above. Tedious, especially if you are still smogged, but not the worst thing you'll ever have to do.

Forever fix...... Drill completely through the mount through the center of the threads . Replace with a 7/16 gr 8 bolt with an all metal locknut and appropriate washers.

Did this many years ago, at your advice or another person on here. Haven’t looked back. Funny that I was just under my 60 earlier and remembered I had done that. Looked at it and smiled!

Open hood put parking brake on get in the landcruiser with some one standing on the driver side looking under the hood at the engine hold the foot brake down and release the clutch or kinda slip it the clutch to see how much the engine moves if the fan hits the fan shroud then the motor mount is no more good shouldn't move that much if its good

I should have done this when I had the chance. Forever is a long time!

Awesome! Will ck shortly. Thanks all for the insights.
@lcwizard any thread or photos to share for the forever fix?

I even had a chain wrapped around my mount loosely to limit movement. I have replaced my mount once, and really should have drilled and bolted it like said above.

I do not have photos. Never really crossed my mind. Now all my drivers have been V-8 converted so I can't even fake it.
OEM is much better than the aftermarket in the case you don't drill them. The ones out of Italy were good for a couple
trips over what I would call a challenging trail. Stock would last longer. The deeper your gearing ( 4 and 5 speed non USA trans or
deep t-case gearing ) the shorter the life span. I always kept two extra in the truck. The process is self explanatory once you look at the
set up.. The one time I forgot an extra I busted a mount about two obstacles into a 4 hour trail. I did the @brownbear thing and took
two ratchet straps and lashed the engine down on that side. I had to stop off and on the give the straps a couple pulls as they loosened up along the way

I chained down the driver side motor mount years ago and I assume the chain is still there. Will drill it next time I'm in there which may be never.

I had to actually chain mine down at Moab. Kept popping out of 4wd, so the torque was lifting the engine up and moving the shifters.

I've seen people make steel limiting straps too.
