I have a BJ40 4 cylinder diesel B engine with manual transmission. Due to some medical issues I have difficulty shifting gears. What I want to do is to convert this to an automatic transmission. Any suggestions on this? What type of a transmission would work w/ my vehi

Have you considered mechanising the stick?
I saw a few prototypes around to add push buttons which then shift the stick pneumatically. Just a thought.

The guy I got mine from always said "if you have a hammer and a torch it has to fit". I'm not an automatic guy and the only one I have ever liked so far is the Alison 6 sp but I think that thing is huge. Gas engine 40's that I have seen in the past had turbo 350, 400 and that era autos with adapters.

Hey Shanthag, I am in the same boat, so let me know what you end up doing. At first I am going to "try" to use the manual transmission. However, it has been 39 years since I had both hips reconstructed (no titanium sockets back then, so bone grafts & steel rods) at the age of 16. Now 20+ surgeries all over, and Parkinson's Syndrome symptoms too, I very well may have to find the same solution you are looking for.

Hey Charlie, were they using an adapter plate and bolting a 350 or 400 to the Toyota straight 6? If so, that "should" mean you could do the same thing with a 700R4 which is like having the Turbo 400 but with an Overdrive. I thought about putting one of those in my '34 Coupe before it was stolen.
Its been a long time I don't remember. The last one, was built 383 dropped in to 76 Fj40 with the Ranger overdrive back in the 1990's.

Thank you! Advanced Adapters.... that may be who I got my adapter plate from 20 years ago and it was a really well made piece. I rebuilt, balanced, and blueprinted a 1958 big block Chrysler Fire Power Hemi, ran the adapter plate and bolted up an A518 automatic overdrive transmission from a Dodge V-10 Viper to drop into my 1934 Dodge Coupe. Lowered the front end 5 1/2 inches, ordered custom axles from Currie so I could have a Chevy bolt pattern on the wheels. I didn't intend on it, but ended doing a complete frame off on it and had it in primer. I was soooo close to being done when it all got stolen, including all of my tools.Its been a long time I don't remember. I'm pretty much in the same boat. in '02 my L knee was described as that of a 95 year old... last year that same surgeon said after 20+ years of compensating my R knee is now worse.

I hate to say this but I think you loose some of the magic of the fj40 with an auto. in saying that I wander if you could put the 3fe fj80/fj62 transmission in. a440f. I would worry about length but I know people do it with LS swaps and chevy transmissions. If I had a fj45 truck I think I personally would think about a complete drive train swap to a 3fe and a440f. Or even better a 1kz and a 343f! This would be really cool in a fj55.
