Bought my truck as a basket case ie engine, tranny, transfer out of the truck and in peices.

My questions: do the rear " motor mounts/trans mounts support the entire weight of the transmission and transfer case? I have no mounting point or bracket to speak of.

I've seen a rear transfer case mount that connects to the overdrive/PTO cover.
I thought it was strickly aftermarket.

What is the best method to follow here for rear support?

Who sells the best engine mounting rubber and rear transfer case support?

Are transfer case support plates ( that strengthen plate) I've seen on ebay and other places worth it?

Well-

What engine tranny and tcase are you looking at mounting?

Stock six, V8 or ????

What trans and tcase do you have?

Sorry about that. stock 4speed and trensfer case for a 1978 fj-40, I'm going to drop in a 79 engine I acquired from Gary in Pottsville Pa. I'm going to be living on this laptop for the next few months trying to work out all these bugs.
Thanks Steve.

Are you close to the frame?

Do you know what stock engine mounts that are rivited to the frame look like?

Do you know if this 'basket case' was going to have a small block installed in it before you picked it up?

factory set up

engine was to be rebuilt and was partially complete, this guy must had spent all his $ on head work and run broke.

I don't want to deviate too munvh from the factory setup but As long as the mods I choose don't permanently alter the truck I'm ok with it.

So are you saying that it has a Toyota F or 2F that is in pieces?

What 'mods' are you thinking/talking about doing?

Post up a couple pics of what you have....might kleer some things up....or make them more foggy.... ;)

the truck is a 78', I bought a 79' 2f engine to replace the dismantled 78' 2F.
As far as mods go it has a new set of springs and shackles (longer) I was told the springs are bought a few years ago and I'm not suprised because they have not gotten completely surface rusted yet. I was also told the lift was 4 inches, but those damn lift shackles while they are well made look too long.

I plan on header, new rear main seal, install engine, 33x9.50's, mini truck power steering, with in the next 2 months Install second locker as well. longer term as in summer, reverse front shackles, some 1/4 panels and poss. a rocker and rear sill.

On a stocker, the front motormounts and the mounts attached to the bellhousing support the engine, transmission and transfercase.

Toyota makes the best mounts, IMO, and they are available from CDan or your local Toyota Dealer.

Poser makes a great TC brace.

It probably was aftermarket particularly if the truck in which you saw it had a V8 conversion, unless you happened upon a diesel powered BJ40-42 which models do have a factory crossmember supporting the rear of the transfer case. In those models the 4 cylinder engine is not placed on a 4 point mount as are the FJ40 6 cylinder engines hence, apparently, the need for additional support.
