Well Guys, I'm needing some input reguarding transfercases. Mine has been leaking between the tranny and t/c for awhile, and just generally making a mess. After pulling it I got to looking, something didn't seem right. I had printed some t/case info from the tech section and compared the two. It seems I have a '67-'69 transfercase in my '77. Somewhere along the line someone swapped it behind my 4 speed. I had been chasing a vibration problem, and found after pulling the driveshaft-#1, pinion flange wasn't tourqed to spec, #2- you could allmost unscrew the nut on the tranny output shaft by hand, allthough the nut that held the p/brake was ok. It doen't feel bad when you spin it by hand, gears looked good to my untrained eye. Is there something I should look for inside the case that would indicate potential problems? I have a late model 3 speed case also if it would be a better case to use. This would be for a simi DD/ mild wheeler. Any/ all advice appreciated. Oh yea, Orion,Atlas etc is not an option. Thanks, Al

You need a rebuild. Plain and simple.

No big deal. It happens with a truck that is almost 30 years old.

the older case has a lower gearset in it. I would try to keep it.

Newer case is supposed to be "stronger" but you have not broken the onld one yet so I am thinking you shoudl be okay for a while.

Check and see if the oil seal that goes into the front of the transfer case, around the output shaft of the transmission, is facing the correct direction.

Was the tcase loose on the tranny?

Was the gasket tore up?

Millhose- no the tranny didn't feel loose ( I shook it, basically had to pry it off the tranny all the way ). I Dave- the seal on the 67-69 case ( spring side of seal towards the tranny ) that came out of my truck is installed the OPPESENT of whats in the '72 case . Mace- counted the gear teeth numbers, both have a 2.31.1 ratio according to the notes in tech. Question- looking at my rear mounts ( I have front craddle mount, bellousing mount, AND AA t/case propeller mount ) do you think I would be able to elleminate the t/case propeller mount, or do you think the Chevy bellhousing would be able to hold the tranny/ t case without cracking? Thanks Guys, keep 'em coming. Al

Removing the propellor mount and going with the bellhousing mount [of course depending on WHICH bellhousing mount it is] could end up with a cracked bellhousing. I HAVE seen it happen.

Most V-8s run side mounts front and a propellor mount rear. The bellhousing and saddle mount went out of favor over 15 years ago not only because of the fixed mounting position of the engine, but because of cracked bellhousings. The stock cast iron bellhousing simply wasn't designed to handle the weight of a transmission AND TRANSFER CASE!

And I second Mace on keeping the case you've got. Just go thru it.

I would also check the idler shaft freeze plug. They always start leaking there.
