I just bought an '85 FJ62 which has spent its life in Kenya, Tanzania and is now in Zambia as our family safari vehicle. This site is what I badly need as the truck's been got at by many an african mechanic.
Most problems I've found answers to here, but one mystery is where the transfer switch should be, there is a switch rivetted over the old hole, which apparently does nothing.
The guy I bought it off said it was something to do with a vacuum but doesn't work any more. It has three postions, the green light for 4wd is always on.
Anyone got any ideas? :flipoff2:

Sorry...but I am in the dark

If you can get us a picture of the switch we might be able to tell you more. The original design had a pushbutton switch on the dash next to the steering column that you could push to switch between 4wd and 2wd. There was also a gear shifter on the floor that controlled high and low. Whenever you would put the shifter in low it would automatically engage 4wd also with out the button pressed. The pushbutton 4wd/2wd switch operated a vacuum switch which operated a diaphram on the t-case. I believe there are two vaccum switches one to engage 4wd and on to engage 2wd. Sometimes these vacuum switches will go bad and keep the transfer case engaged in 2wd or keep it in 4wd with no real way of getting it out. Hope this might get you a starting point on diagnosing the problem. Hope this isn't too confusing.

There is 2 solenoids on the firewall on the RH side.
The push button that is normally there sends power to either solenoid
Each one has a hose that goes the tcase and pulls it in/out of 4wd
If a hose get an airleak or comes loose it will be stuck in whatever mode it was in before it leaked.
If the other hose still has vacuum it can be swapped over to either pull it in/out of 4wd.
When low range is selected with the gear stick it should automatically engage 4wd without touching the button.

If your driving on hard surfaces it should only be done in 2wd.
If it is stuck in 4wd I suppose you could unlock the FWHubs as a temporary measure

It could be converted to manual shift if you had the t/case front plate off a 60 series landcruiser from 84-90 or 84-98 in the 75 series.

Parts

Thanks for all that. I have a toyota townace 4wd which is dying on me so now I know what I'm looking at I'll try and take the parts off it and stick them in the cruiser.
Doing the knuckles this weekend with a bush mechanic's assistance, cant wait after reading all the comments here.

Is there a mail order site for second hand parts anyone can recommend? There are some things I'd like that you just can't pick up easily here, a new filler cap for the power steering for a start, mine's been attacked with a knife for some reason.

Thanks again.
