Today out of the blue the trucker showed up to pick up my FJ and ship it to the UK for my move--so I am scrambling around putting on driveshaft nuts I just got today and throwing parts in the back and strapping down the hood and so forth!

but when I started it up I could hear what sounded like the gears whirring round in the transfer case-- I tried moving the 4wd lever into different positions but the sound didn't stop

hadn't heard that before when I started it and drove it in and out of the garage---just a lever position thing or a possible problem?

In any case I wont see it again until July over in the UK---WTH will I do with myself now I'll have to trim hedges or something:eek::eek::eek:

Didnt really have time to try anything with the truck waiting --Driving it up the truck ramp was my first climb in the 40!

It's probably upset about the move.

Doesn't it drive you nuts when there's a problem and you can't even work on it?

Did it make the sound with the TC in neutral? Front drive engaged or not?

Are you sure its not your throwout bearing?
I'm amazed the shippers let you put parts inside your Cruiser. When I shipped my Cruiser it had to be void of any parts. If it wasn't bolted down, it couldn't go.

not the TO bearing

no definite it is not the TO bearing totally different ---like gears turning noise

I could hear it in neutral trans where-ever I put the transfer case lever

all the clutch components are new ---I have started it a fair few times and drove it in and out of the garage and even around the block and never heard it

I am thinking maybe the linkage is just out of whack or I need to drive it to disengage 4wd properly or something like that?

Is your FD factory vacuum? Sometimes mine would do that a little until it fully engaged, until everything smoothed out from regular use.

fd

nope, no vacuum --it's a 71 but the drivetrain is all 79---2f with a 4speed and the 4 speed xfer case

OK, did it go away with the transmission in neutral?

neutral

no thats when I heard it --running in the garage in neutral
