Transfer Case to Transmission Leak?

Yes it can. It's not uncommon.

Yes it can, has happened before.

So I presume the appropriate seal replacement means dropping the transmission and transfer case, dismantle and probably do all seals while you're at it type thing - fairly major surgery right?

Not necessarily. Leave the tranny where it is, pull the transfer case off, clean off the old paper gasket, replace with some RTV and bolt the transfer case back on.

OK, thanks for the replies. I like the idea of just removing the transfer case (or partially removing to get gasket access).

Anybody happen to have a pic or part diagram to show exactly which seal/gasket is the culprit.

So finally getting around to some winter projects. Bought the return tube loop from SOR. It seems really long - like a couple feet plus. Is this right? Anybody got an installed pic?

I had that problem a few years back I just resealed the trans & T-case but it wasn't leaking through the splines, it was very easy to just pull the case about 2hrs & I was back on the road. Good luck!

Replacing the seal might not help a lot.. Gear oil gets pumped through the splines on acceleration/deceleration, replacing the seal wont help this.. Install the return tube and be done with it..

This is correct. It is usually not the seal on 4 speed trannys, but worn splines.
