I am building an Orion. I called my local Toyota parts man looking for a transfer case rear output shaft and the high/low shift collar for a 78 case. He informed me that both parts are discontinued.

SOR has the high/low shift collar for $100 (ouch).
SOR doesn't have an OEM rear output shaft for a later than 75.
SOR does have a shaft for 58-75 for $235 (ouch x2).

1) What is the difference between the 75 and 78 output shaft?

I have a 74 case in my cruiser, but I also have a complete later style case with the ribbed front output housing, not sure what year it is.

2) Are there any other sources for these parts(new)?

3) How many of you guys have used your old rear output shaft and high low shift collar without any problems?

36234-60023 $107.92 Front Output Shaft 78-80 FJ40
36231-60012 $217.78 Output Shaft 75-80 FJ40
36235-60011 $56.58 High/Low Shift Collar 75-80 FJ40

The front output shaft has a fine spline driveshaft flange. If you do not currently have a fine spline flange you will need to get one from Kurt @ Cruiser Outfitters.

I am not aware of either the 69-74 front output shaft or the 69-74 rear output shaft being disc. The 75-78 front output shaft is disc. So you will either need to upgrade to the 78-80 front output shaft or reuse your old one.

All prices are from Toyota Parts Direct. They are offering a 5% discount wcich should help cover the freight. Or I would just shoot C Dan a PM and order from him. He should be the same price. Your local dealer will probably quote you 30% higher.

It's only $390 worth of parts, and will basically net you a brand new case. You already spent some coin on the Orion kit, why hold out and risk damaging the gears later or having to rebuild the case. I would spend $390 to have extra insurance in knowing everything is new with the exception of the front output housing. The reinforced ribbed housing should be plenty, or you can talk to AA and get there billet housing.

I don't see the need for a new front output shaft, since the wear on it is minimal compared to the rear.

I have the complete late model case with the ribbed front output housing, including flanges, so I'm good there.

Another question:

Will a pre '75 rear output shaft work with a later front output shaft? I assume it will.

no.

there are two different aspects of the t-case front output shafts that changed. first and foremost is the spline count of the section that the shift collar slides on. early-4/'75 it was coarse splined. after that is is fine spline.

next is for the 78 and newer cases, which went to a fine spline output portion of the front output shaft, ie where the drive flange slides on. these changed to the "fine spline" pinion flanges in 78

so there are three different front output shafts... early-4/'75 with a coarse/coarse setup, 4/'75-1/'78 with a fine/coarse setup and 1/'78-end with a fine/fine setup.

Called Dan at American Toyota. No dice on the shaft or shift collar.

New strategy:

Does anyone want to sell me these two NEW pieces? Poser? Woody? Mark?
PM me if you want to get rid of them.

Get the shaft from SOR, it looks like an aftermarket Japanese piece for $170. Also get the shift collar from them, it is $99.00. Probably NOS.

I think I'd rather use one of my used shafts instead of an aftermarket piece. You never know what you have with that. I will end up buying the shift collar from them I guess, even though it is a rip.

Call Danial At Wimberly Offroad the dude has all kinds of Land Cruiser parts (830) 626-3111

You might want to try Advance Adapters (1-800-350-2223)
I have been very pleased with the customer service and tech support they provide.

Your putting aftermarket gears in an aftermarket case with aftermarket hardware and you are worried about an aftermarket output shaft? Atleast it isn't made in China.

I tried searching for the front output, 36234-60023, on Toyota Parts Direct's website and it comes up empty. My Toyota parts guy says it's discontinued and there are none left in the inventory system.

Is your info current?

Phil

edit: LOL, I just realized the date.... doh! That's what I get for interneting before my second cup of coffee. :D

I have been told SOR output shafts are made by the same source as toyota used, they are quality shafts.
