What is the name of this part? Retaining lock? I was doing the speedo gear over the weekend and noticed it was missing, apparently since the TC rebuild... If I used 4 wheel drive a couple of times without it, will it have caused any internal damage?

TIA,
ML

The circled part is your main shaft.

The piece that is missing is a bolt (small hole to the SE of the shaft) and a little tab that holds the main shaft in place and prevents it from spinning.

DO NOT DRIVE IT without that locking piece. It is not a 4wd issue, it is a all the time issue and you can blow that pretty tcase up rapidly without it.

You dodged a major bullet.

Your arrow is pointing at the end of the idler shaft.

There is currently nothing holding it in the case. 4wd or 2wd if it walks out a bit and drops the thrust washer or the end of the shaft gets completely loose, your case will self destruct instantly.

You are missing the retainer and the bolt. don't drive until those are replaced.

idler gear shaft lock plate.

it hgolds in the gear shaft, i would not enuf drive without it or the shaft might slip out, then you blow your tcase.

nice looking tcase btw

Wow, I lucked out cause I've been driving it like that for about two years... Glad it did not slip out!

That pic is from when the wagon got the Vortec, along with the TC rebuild. Looks like the lock plate was never installed...

Thanks All!
