Does anyone have pictures / advice of what you did in this situation?

I’d use stronger tape.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. I kept the original linkage and lengthened the rod about 7”. That was for a 4L60e and the original dash shift. What year is your 40?

Mine is a 1973. I installed AA’s relocation bracket but as you can see in need to makeup some real estate. I had the original 3 speed transfer case rebuilt while it was out. I purchased this FJ40 in 2011 not running with rotten floors and such. I pulled the original engine out and dropped in a 327 I’ve had since the early 80’s. I bolted it up to the original 3 speed transmission. I did some bodywork and paint and started driving it in 2013. I purchased a new motor from Blueprint this year and had a local shop build me a transmission with AA’s adapter parts. Just down to the small but time consuming items

Looking good 👍🏼. It’s amazing how many little details there are in these swaps. I did a lot of reading of other people’s threads for answers and found that the Safari or Google search function worked better than the MUD one. It always referred back to MUD, but just got me there quicker.
Georg at @orangefj45 may have some ideas.

Here's are two pics of mine. We made a plate to weld the shifter's pivot stud to and mounted it using the old tranny mount holes. Obviously it's a bit further back so we had to chop the tranny cover and fab a new boot. In the process I ditched the sheet metal shift gate so I have Hi-2 and Lo-2 as well as 4WD.
