I think my transfer case is on it's last leg. It had a nasty bearing whine when I bought the cruiser, and after my last trip, it got worse. I've been checking out info on rebuilding it, but after looking at this t-case info page ( http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/cases.html ) I am wondering if mine is one of the early, more brittle cases. When exactly was the cut off between '69 and '70?
Mine rolled out of the factory in November of '69 (1970 model 55). If it is indeed one of the older, more brittle cases, I might just replace it with a newer one.
Thanks in advance!
Zipp.

Given the fact that Toyota never did "specific" parts changes and only quit using something when it's supply was out on the shelf, it could fall either way. Your only true sign is the visual inspection based on what is on that link....

The 74 FJ40's had the "transition" transfer case cause they had spare parts on the shelf and it was cheaper to make a new input gear than to just toss away a bunch of overstocked cases...
