I have just purchased my 1996 LC Amazon, and been doing all the usual checks on the diffs, transfer box etc.
I noticed the auto box was on the low/cool level when checked when at normal running temp, I topped up to the hot level mark.
I read this comment in a reply to clunky gear shifting.

"6. Checking the transfer case oil level and condition is a good start. Occasionally people find ATF in there by mistake. Also check the front and rear axle diff oil levels and top up or change if required. This is also a good time to make sure your diff breathers are not blocked up"

When I checked the transfer box, I noticed it was at the correct level but it did look like it had the red ATF in there, would this be correct or should it be EP 80 gear oil??????

gear oil over here dude. Redline made/makes a red synthetic gear lube that was developed for those manual trannies and gear boxes that required ATF fluid. That might be the stuff you see in there. I would drain and fill with the correct lubricant which is 75w 90 I beleive.

So how'd you check it, stick your finger in there? If it were me I'd dump all of the gear oil, then replace... do the transfer case and both diffs. Yes, it should be gear oil in all 3, not ATF. A lot of us like Mobil 1 gear oil for all three gear boxes... welcome! :flipoff2:

gear oil

Hi all.... thanks for the replies, is mobil 1 gear oil an EP 80 or 90? and why do you think my transfer box has the thin red stuf in it?
Do you know how much oil is in the diffs and the transfer box, so I know how much to buy.

Buy 10 quarts- I think M1 is 75wt actually... what's EP? Read Rick's post above again, he's saying that your gear lube in the T-case may in fact be gear oil, not ATF. Then again, it could be ATF.. how do you know for sure? you don't, that's why you're changing it. While you're at the store pick up a $15 Haynes manual, it's got all of the capacities in the front, also some other handy stuff. Later you can graduate to the factory service manual.. much more info in there, but more $$.

Maybe it's not ATF, I don't know, just reading your posts.

Replace Xcase Oil, Hand pump or Syring?

Hey, used this thread to ask a very Basic question on what's
worked best for those who do own Transfer Case and Diff.'s
oil changes? primarly with regard to replacing new oil in Top plug of the X-Case? Just a little tight up there.
Need to make a night run, and want done TONIGHT.

I'm not jacked up, just pulled in and drained.

Would REALLY appreciate !!

Geoff

Thanks

Hey, missed that one! Some great thoughts, but I think I'm off to
Wally town and just pick up a 99 Cent Turkey Baster.

Fill kids squirt gun came to mind....., ah, better not.

If I crame the tip in, darn cable's in my way.
Design fart.... A CO2 powered Syring... I'll sell a couple and retire!

Thanks for the link, As the GOV. says...... I'll Be Back!

Found a fair sized Marine mix oil Syring with Tub, for $2.69
Just needed to be about 4 times LARGER, still made quick time.
Anyone interested in prototype / investment ??

Now, should I park downhill and LOAD err up ?? (just kidding),
Got to tug @ someone's T-case.

Pushing 3 a.m., now into the steering knuckle issue, and front diff.
Ran out of greese, and don't ask how much I used for just ONE side.
Other thread, and back to that issue in 5 hours. Snooooz time. Later,

Some 4x4s are speced to use ATF in the transfercase. Previous owner or mechanic must have thought that was the right thing to do for the cruiser.
