Posting this for my brother because he is too lazy or too stupid to register and post it himself. I have grown tired of hearing him complain about this sound coming from trannie or transfer case. Apparently he hears a loud thunk or thud (you make the call) when he hits a bump. Says it feels like the transfer/trannie is going to fall out of the truck. He bought this 94 LC 80 about four months ago. He went over this rig really well but missing this item. It does not occur every time he hits a bump. This is problem making him nervous and annoying me. So if you have any info please feel free to chim in. I tried to search this but no such luck. Well if anyone has heard of this problem let me know and I will relate the info to the ignoramus. Oh by the way hello everyone, I am the newby on the block. I am looking at 1994 LC 80 tomorrow, so wish me luck. I have been looking for some time now but have not liked what I have seen. This one should be a gem, original owner bla, bla, bla…

Re:Trannie / Transfer issue....

Welcome newps.

Search the 80 section using keyword = thud ; days = 500

More than likely it's a bad/missing shock bushing but there's lots of other things it could be. You'll have to narrow it down or we are all just speculating.

Other possibilities in no particlar order:
Motor mount
Suspension bushings (sway bar)
Loose caliper (this could be dangerous)
Broken exhaust clamp
Dry DS slip yoke

Trannie / Transfer issue....

Thanks for the response Beowulf. Maybe some more info will help. We are 99% sure this is driveline related. Would never have thought of a dry slip yoke, I will have him check both for smooth operation. Could this have anything to do with the all wheel drive system? Maybe the switching of power front to rear in conjunction with the loading and unloading of the driveline as he encounters the bumps? This is just a guess since I have never owned and all wheel drive vehicle before. I know there are some handling quirks with an all wheel drive system that one must get use to.

Trannie / Transfer issue....

I think B is on the right track, I doubt an intermittent thud only over bumps is something with driveline (major mechanical).

I would start with B's suggestions and work up...his advice is cheaper to start and is more likely to be the cause.

Trannie / Transfer issue....

could be the "clunk"?

Trannie / Transfer issue....

Thanks for the responses, dam you guys are good would never have thought of a “clunk”. That is like a metal-to-metal thud, no? Well I will have him check the items listed below. The pig has about 120,xxx ish on her. When he bought it the rear main seal was leaking so he took it back to the dealer and they had it repaired (not by a Toyota dealer). I am not sure if this was happening before the main was repaired. I know they have to drop the tranny/transfer to do this. Could they have of missed something when they put it back together? I know this is kind of worthless since I am not the one with the issue but I am trying to help him out. Anyway fire away, any insults are appreciated.

Have you tried wiping your anus with one of his good socks?? That will usually light a fire under them. :D

To be clear about the conditions this occurs under, does this happen when just coasting over bumps, or only under load...or both? Sounds more like a gravity related thing, than a rotational driveline slack kind of thing.

Have not tried the sock thing but if you think it will help, I will do it. ::) I believe this is only happening when under load. I spoke with him today and he is certain this is coming from under the driver/passenger seats.

Opps. No... actually that just pisses them off. My bad. :slap: I'll try to remember what the "light a fire under them" thing was.

Keep trying to isolate the location and conditions causing the sound. That will be the key to helping point you in the right direction.

He can always take it back to the dealer that did the rear main work, and give them the "uhh.. it didn't do this before you worked on it" line.

swaybar or front shock bushings...

Re:Trannie / Transfer issue....

Look behind the cat where the exhaust pipe makes a bend. There is a rubber exhaust mount there. I tried to remove my exhaust and the nuts to the mount werer rusted and the studs broke off. It has been that way all winter. When I hit a bump the mount makes a metal to metal noise.

If its the tranny/tcase you should be able to feel it move when you hit a bump when as you hold the shifters.
Have him, while he is driving, put one hand on the tranny shifter and the other on the t-case shifter and then drive that way at the mall while driving over the speed bumps. If its flopping around he should feel it flop.

Put a jack under the tranny/tcase and lift a LITTLE and see if it moves.

My bet is its the exhaust.

Thanks landtoy80, that’s sounds like it might help him located the issue. I spoke with him today; he said it happens when he is on the gas and when just coasting. I suggested the floor jack thing too, just to see if anything is loose. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. This should at least give him some direction for right now. I suggested he call Sleeve Off-Road and describe the problem but who knows if he will or not.
