Guys,

I think the trailing arm bushes of my KZJ78 are worn out.
The garage charges me a lot of $$ for replacing so I want to be sure they are worn out.
What is typical car behavior when these bushes are gone?

Thanks

Well,

When I bought the car it was steering wobbly (if that is the right word) and that happen to be one of the bushes for the front axel.
Since the car did 249000 km I think the other bushes might be gone as well.
The things I notice when I drive the car is the hard noise and bumping when drive over speedbumps etc.
The shocks have been replaced by original Toyota shocks.
Also some slight vibration in the steering wheel at random speeds.
Tires have been balanced.

this does sound like the bushings could be gone, take a look and see if it is steel on steel or if the bushings are cracked or compressed badly...

Check the rubber bush's on the shocky pins, these could be dozy.
Get a pry bar and see if you can get any up & down movement on the arms.
Drive foward and backward and have someone look to see if there is any rotational movement of the diff.

I've got a UK spec LJ70 with worn bushes in the rear trailing arms, and the best way to see how worn they are is to drive the truck forward into a solid wall - slowly. Then lie down at the side so you can see the bushes and get someone to let the clutch out slowly in 1st gear.

The back end will jack up and all the wear in the bushes will be obvious.

Well,

I have to find myself a solid wall then.
The car is automatic but that should not make a difference (I hope)

Hopefully I can find out if the bushes are worn out so I don't have to spend the money for nothing.

Thanks so far guys

Yes, the solid wall works very effectivley, and it's far safer than doing it with the front wheels on a curb. Not that I would actually recommend that you stick your head UNDER a Cruiser when somebody else is actually letting the clutch out.

But looking at the trailing arms from just in front of the back wheels you can see exactly how the bushes are moving.

And furthering this thread, if the LJ's bushes are shot, who makes poly bushes to replace them?

In the UK I have tried the suppliers and manufacturers who advertise R***r bushes but NONE have ever got back to me. If they don't make them then just tell me, all I ask is that I'm not pissed about by them.
If I have to I'll import a set.

Denis, I still use Pirate, but sometimes I wonder why I bother? there's so much macho bull**** going on there, and the majority of users are so insular towards 'foreigners' that it pisses me off. But the fact is the tech information is second to none. So I guess it's a 'love - hate' thing. Surely there's a place for people who just want to share and find the information they need?
